Sorry but what is the issue with 'chain' stores ? Also KFC and subway are franchised I believe. If you dislike the coffee shops mentioned why not go to cafe Italia or revival coffee.
Free market economy eh? Who would want that ?

Also wetherspoons actually is one of the largest purchases or beers from small brewerys.

They are boring, mindless and mean, full of pornography the kind that's clean.

Not an issue per se. More an issue with balance, I like a mix but in a very short space of time the balance has shifted noticeably and in my opinion negatively. And we have lost a good chippy to an inferior chain version.

Local businesses also 'contribute' more to the local economy; a pound spend in a local shop is worth more than a pound spent in a chain so there is this to consider.

Oh, and I do use Revival.

The market doesn't seem very free when the bigger companies can use complex accounting to pay minimal taxes which the tax bods seemingly ignore. If Revival set up system and paid f*** all corporation tax I'm pretty sure HMRC would turn a blind eye to them like they do to another coffee company.

Whatever ambience George Street had left has now been ruined by the 12 (yes 12) huge yellow 'NO CYCLING DURING THE HOURS OF PEDESTIANISATION' signs which have just been erected at the start, end and all the way down George Street. Why so big? Why so many? And these are on top of all the other signs and assorted shit the council have stuck up on this short road. Totally ugly and totally unnecessary.

Hove is just depressing these days.

Welcome too to the 8-10 minimum wage jobs created !

For every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. 8-10 jobs could be being lost elsewhere

Suprised the signs aren't GREEN.

But seriously, why are they yellow? Basic road sign understanding tells me the sign should be a red circle, white background and a black bicycle, otherwise it carries no weight under 'The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002'

Maybe the signs you describe were not deemed ugly and visually invasive enough?

Ha ha, you may be right. Frankly, if I saw those signs, and I had a bicycle, I'd ride on regardless, those signs do not convey prohibition under the Act

That's dreadful.

They can't spell PEDESTRIANISATION for a start.

the charity shops will get squeezed out:(

It's a three way battle between the charity shops, chain coffee shops and the HUGE yellow signs at the moment. My money is on the coffee shops prevailing.

Oh great. Another independent business going.

This is the second Lion Group pub to to go. Is everything all right with the Lion Man?

He's cool. He's in very good form lately.
If he's feeling down he can just pop along to The Cricketers and listen to the till ringing constantly.

He's on a hiding to nothing at that place in George Street. It used to be busy back in the day but of course now anyone who wants a coffee goes to the coffee shops and Trevorspoons sell their booze far cheaper than he ever could. He just can't win sadly.
