Makes today NOT the day it should have been - mass celebration that football's back.

Doesn't seem so important now, does it?

I would think rumours of other players may unfortunately be true. The time being taken to issue news suggests they may be trying to contact a number of relatives?

It is all speculation at the moment, of course, as nothing has been announced officially, but there seems little doubt about the fatality.

The rumour is that the accident happened on the M40 north of Oxford at 5am this morning. If this is true (and I repeat it is only a rumour and should be treated accordingly) then I would be surprised if more than one player was on the road at that time (to be honest, it doesn't sound likely any player would be on the road at 5am on gameday).

If it was a car crash, one must also be concerned that other vehicles may have been involved, and our prayers should be with them just as much.

WATFORD'S JIMMY DAVIS DIES

Saturday August 09 2003

Manchester United striker Jimmy Davis has been tragically killed in a car crash on the M40 on Saturday morning.

Davis was due to make his debut for Watford on loan as their Nationwide season began on Saturday against Coventry City.

But the game was postponed after news of the 21-year-old's death emerged.

Davis is a former trainee at Manchester United who has made just one first-team appearance for the club - against Arsenal in the Worthington Cup.

He spent part of last season on loan at Swindon Town and previously had a spell at United's Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp.
