Wouldn't it be better to invest in a quality watch that will last a life time?

I'm particularly not keen on the environmental irresponsibility of this... Or have you have found a good way to recycle them? In addition to that I would wager that these watches are produced in something akin to sweat shops in Asia.

I'm not a victim of watch snobbery, and the environmental impact of me discarding a watch every three or four years is negligable. Besides, £4.99 from time to time is peanuts compared to spending hundreds, or even thousands on a watch and then spending the rest of my life worrying about breaking it or losing it, or being mugged by some scumbag scrote for it. Well happy doing it my way, thanks.

But this reminds me; my dad always wore a watch, but with the face on the INSIDE of his wrist. Just looking it up on google, it is suggested that soldiers did/do this to avoid the chance of reflection off the face giving away their position to the enemy. My dad fought at the end of the Second World War and so I wonder if it was a habit picked up from his army days?

Does anyone else wear the face on the inside?

Now you come to mention it, I remember it being a bit of a fad for a couple of years in the 60s when I was at school. I think I probably went along with it for a while. No bl00dy idea why though!

I have had a titanium Breitling, a Tag and a Oris in my time. However I have now turned my back on expensive watches as they are the biggest con going. I had nothing but trouble with the Breitling including having one of the hands full off whilst I was swimming. I returned it to Breitling and they wanted to charge me £400 pounds to put it back!

A basic service on a premium watch is £300 + and my Dad who has a rolex sent his back and got a bill for £1500! I just can't see how these watch makers get away with charging that much.

Daily wear is Tissot PRC100, left wrist, wear it all the time.

I also have a 1940's Tudor Oyster which I love but am nervous of wearing it in the shower and bath, although it should be fine, so I tend to take it off then although I have been known to forget..often. Not sure if there might be something not quite right about it because it has the Rolex logo on the face rather than a Tudor Rose or Shield.

My father did this. He might still do but I can't recall if he wears a watch. He wasn't in the forces though.

£4.99 in the local indoor market (occasionally splash out on a £9.99 one). Digital. Doesn't need winding. Looks like an expensive one. Keeps perfect time. Worn 24 hours a day except for bath/shower time. The straps wear out long before the watches - throw away and buy a new one. Job done.

Got a Breitling Colt Automatic from late 90s. Had a few problems with it until the now retired Frank Patten of Hove got hold of it. He's a proper old school horologist and the watch has never skipped a beat since he tuned it properly. A fraction of the cost of sending back to the Breitling 'experts'!

I've got a Tag which isn't too far away from being 30 years old now. I took out a student loan at university to buy it.

I haven't worn it for years now - it's just so small compared to modern watches.

Tag bought by the lovely Mrs Hiney as an engagement present in 1994. It stays in a box. Every day watch is a Breitling Superocean. Had it for about 13 years and it's cost a bit over the years in servicing, but I absolutely love it.

I have a 20 year old Seiko which my parents gave me 20 years ago. Keeps perfect time and batteries seem to last about 5 years.
I also have a self winding Omega which my late brother left me and I know costume him at least 2 grand. Although I keep it in its winding machine it still manages to lose about a minute a month. It also weighs a ton so it only comes out for special occasions.

It won't be OK to wear near water unless it has had a recent service but even then it's doubtful for such an old watch. Rolex should not be on the watch face it would be a Tudor Rose, the Shield was introduced much later. Tudor are owned by Rolex and case markings and the crown are marked Rolex on older watches but never on the dial.

A proper watchmaker is a very highly skilled specialist, and there is a real shortage of them Omega founded their own school in the UK, because it was the only was to fill the posts. There are specific Omega movements that only two or three people are qualified to work on.

If it helps I can put you in touch with a few mates of mine who all wear watches and swear they are better than phones for telling the time at work - they just happen to be Royal Marines, a Para and a Royal Engineer - they'll love to discuss being called pen pushers with you !
