Sees it closedown tonight,after almost 75 ?
Years of greyhound racing. Falling gates have seen the stadium sold to developers. Oh those were the days.

I used to have a share in a greyhound running at Walthamstow, almost 15 years ago now, and heading up there on a cold night, and seeing the neon sign from miles away and knowing you were in for a great evening win or lose, was always special.

It's not closing because of decling gates. Walthamstow is the best track in dog racing, the Ascot or Silverstone of the sport. It's closing because the owners wanted to cash in on the land value, in particular with the London Olympics in mind.

A very, very sad day for this punter.

My heart can't bleed in quite the same way, I'm afraid. Greyhound racing is a pretty vile sport. The dogs are farmed and treated as money-making commodities. Sadly, most of them don't make the grade, and are disposed of accordingly. True, some are re-homed through the Retired Greyhound Trust, but there is an enormous disparity between the numbers bred each year, and the number that end up racing. It doesn't take much imagination to work out where the 'missing' hounds end up.

B&W Seagull,

Racing at Walthamstow gave immense pleasure to millions over its 75 years, myself included, so I am more than happy to argue the toss with you as to why its closure is a loss to the sport of greyhound racing and to the local community, and as such a moment to be marked and mourned by those who loved it and will cherish its memory.

It might be helpful, though, if you could first confirm that you follow a strict vegan lifestyle, since anything else would mark you down as a hypocrite who is either too stupid, or too lazy, to think through the fundamental contradictions in their argument.

More than enough to keep it going though, Wozza, had it not been for the sudden jump in land values in the area when the East End got the nod for 2012. It was suddenly worth more for building on than it was for having sporting events on, and the speculators began to circle. I'm sure I don't have to point out a very obvious parallel in football.

But mere thousands during its last few years. (Well, until the closure was announced, then everyone started going again.)

Like the Conseriative Club in Eastbourne, they announce that they are closing down due to losing money, selling the building to a building company and splitting the profit between members, and all of a sudden it is busy again.
