stayed in cape town for a month during the world cup. we rented an apartment in sea point, just below lions head mountain/hill
prob your best bet, you can walk to the v&a from there (takes about 25 mins) and you can walk down to the seafront which is quite similar to brighton promenades. its one of the safer areas, and 1 of my mates went for runs every other night along the waterfront

its good for bars and restaurants too so think this would be a good bet

stayed at the protea cape castle in green point the last time I was there for the cricket, hotel was fine. 10 mind stroll to V and A waterfront, 5 mins taxi to long st and 10 min taxi to camps bay. lovely city CT. felt safe enough, just make sure you gets cabs after dark.

Here
Camps Bay. If Le Med is still open on a Sunday afternoon/evening it's a must.

Another vote for Camps Bay. Great beaches, restaurants and lots of good, not too expensive accommodation options.
