Has anyone come up with an answer as to how this evil corrupt government (I think I've got that right?) is going to prevent people getting ID cards.and which groups are they going to target?

Cost could make it prohibitive for some? What’s the price of a driving license or a passport these days?

What questions would you set the likes of myself before I can spoil my paper at the next GE? I hope it won’t be sums..I’m rubbish at sums.

A driving licence costs from a few hundred pounds upwards allowing lessons/tests etc. and won’t be available to a great many.
A passport costs a minimum £85 I think and again not all have one.

These are financially out of reach for very many people.

A free issue ID is one solution but will be seen (probably rightly) as the precursor of a police state with obligatory production.

It’s unquestionably aimed at voter suppression and very directly aimed at what are perceived to be potentially anti-Tory voters. It is another step on the road to a single party fascist state.

Sigh. They don't have to have a passport or a driving license. Bus passes are free - the government only has to legalise them as valid ID - possibly do the same with the over 18 cards that kids all have these days to buy drinks.
For those for whom none of these four options are available, they can either issue the ID cards for free, or make a nominal charge - maybe a tenner - to cover the cost. Of course, they could have just uprated the NI cards that everybody got by adding a photo and a chip - but of course, some numpty decided to abolish the NI cards - it's called [not] joined up government!

The government have made no such proposal as far as I know.
To be non-discriminatory in terms of suppressing votes a card must be free and issue must be automatic and not based on application

Fatuousness aside, perhaps the democratic route and the state bears the cost?
But of course democracy isn’t the purpose

most our european friends need to have ID to vote and their cards arent free. are they discriminatory?

im only trying to help here, if everyone wants to bang on about the availablity and cost of the ID card, that will be solved and we'll have them in short order. pick the right battleground. its not about voter suppression, its about introducing an ID.

I agree we don't need it, but we've virtually got it already. My question, which you and others haven't answered, is how this conspiracy theory is going to disbar people from getting an ID card, and how will they identify those individuals that the government wish to disenfranchise?
Frankly, doing that would probably cost more to sort out and administer than just giving everybody without a driving license, passport or bus pass a free ID card. Still, it's a good conspiracy theory as conspiracy theories go

For those who do not already have an acceptable form of photo ID, The Electoral Commission have suggested a free of charge locally issued photo ID based on the existing scheme in Northern Ireland.
The Commission estimated 92% of the electorate already have one form of the photo ID it was recommending could be used.

I'm sure they'll think of a way. But the why is the main point.

If anyone in the public or private sector made a suggestion that was going to add bureaucracy, add cost to either the taxpayer or the public, with no financial benefit to solve a problem that doesn't appear to exist they'd get a very quick answer

Exactly. I've never been in favour of ID cards, but now that photo ID has become mandatory for so many transactions, it doesn't make ot any worse to add it to polling. It doesn't hurt, though I admit I find it mildly irritating.
It's just some people getting in such a mindless tizzy about it, as if the whole thing is the spawn of the devil or something. True, there are currently many people who don't have photo ID, but the vast majority of us already do.

Yes, they'd either introduce it straight away, or run a pilot scheme, which, like all pilot schemes, would be continued even when it proves to be a disaster. It happens all the time - don't you follow government actions? The Civil Service lives to increase bureaucracy - that means to them more influence and more funding. The writers of 'Yes Minister' weren't postulating fantasy ideas of the way government works!
You may or may not be old enough to remember the poll tax. It was piloted in Scotland, and following its unmitigated disaster it was launched nationwide. I would also refer you to PFI ..............

Britain may collectively have the 6th largest GDP in the world but around 15m have less than £100 in savings, as you say this is voter suppression nothing else. Then there's the upcoming boundary changes, I wonder who that will benefit?

Sadly there does seem to be a smattering of crypto fascists in the current government, where will it end?

Using some common sense i would suspect that "that id card" was a reference to the national ID scheme and not the current topic of showing a form of ID to vote (even including existing ID we have) - two separate and different instances-, so its pretty irrelevant whoever the politician was.
