Apparently this was in the Argus yesterday......If it's been debated to death already, my apologies, but I couldn't see anything.

"Election hopeful David Logan was dropped by the
Conservatives for backing the Falmer stadium bid.

The Tory candidate for Kemp Town in Brighton was forced to
resign by members of his own party who are opposed to the
proposed Brighton and Hove Albion stadium, it emerged
today.

The association is split down the middle over the issue and
it is understood the briefing against Mr Logan began when
he appeared in The Argus last month with shadow sports
minister Hugh Robertson backing the stadium.

Conservatives have agreed not to speak publicly about the
reasons for Mr Logan standing down.

His supporters strongly denied suggestions Mr Logan had
been sacked by Conservative Central Office because of a
weak election campaign.

One senior party member said: "When David was effectively
forced to resign he did so on the basis that there was a
localised campaign.

"But there was a major falling out on one policy issue with
a small number of people. It was about the Falmer stadium.

"The campaign team meeting was hijacked. There was a group
of people who were very firmly against the bid and they
called a motion of no confidence.

"They would not tolerate their candidate even having a view
on the issue so David's position was impossible and he
tendered his resignation."

The Kemp Town seat is among the Conservatives' target seats
at the next election, along with Brighton Pavilion and Hove
and Portslade.

Labour increased its majority at the last election to 4,922
after first snatching the constituency from the Tories at
the 1997 election landslide.

The insider added: "I'm sure there was an element of the
fact the selection process was very unpopular with the same
group of people even before he arrived."

Mr Logan declined to comment further than his initial
statement that there was "no scandal" attached to the
resignation.

Brian Dando, the Conservative chairman in Kemp Town, said:
"We had our regular campaign meeting when we review all
activities of the campaign and we also look at policy
issues. We did not get satisfaction from David Logan on
some of these matters.

"We held a full meeting of the executive council. When Mr
Logan was asked to speak, he read a prepared statement in
which he tendered his resignation.

"Falmer was one of the issues we discussed. We have had a
policy of being against Falmer as we feel match days will
be a big problem in many parts of the constituency."

Albion are waiting for a decision from Deputy Prime
Minister John Prescott about plans to build a 23,000 seat
stadium on the edge of Falmer.

A public inquiry is expected to draw to a close next month
after Mr Prescott ordered further investigation into
alternative sites.

Conservative challengers for all three Labour-controlled
seats in the city hoped to make political capital from the
fact the Labour Government had stalled plans for a
community stadium.

Mike Weatherley, the Tory candidate for the neighbouring
Brighton Pavilion seat, confirmed the sacking of Mr Logan
had not dented his support for the Falmer proposal.

He said: "I fully support Brighton and Hove Albion's bid to
relocate to a new Falmer stadium - and even have the
T-shirt to prove it."

Des Turner, the Labour MP for Kemp Town, said: "This all
looks to be a bit of a shambles and puts any future
candidate in a rather invidious position.

"If he fails to support Falmer, he will not be getting any
votes from Albion fans but if he does back the proposal, he
will lose the support of his own party.

"This also puts the lid on any suggestion Labour is trying
to delay the inquiry or we are the ones not supporting
Falmer.

"There is no mileage now for Albion supporters voting
Tory."

A substitute candidate for Mr Logan will be chosen by the
end of January as the expected date of the election of May
5 approaches. "

Eh ? The guy must be a f*cking idiot !

It'll be an even bigger problem for Kemp Town if the decision is to build the Stadium at Sheepcote Valley.

Proof, if any were needed, that the tories only look after the vested interests in this country, & don't give a sh*t about ordinary people.

The REAL Tories are starting to show their TRUE colours on the Falmer issue. Mr Daily Mail reader and Mrs Blue rinse from Rottingdean have flexed their muscles. This guy jumped on the bandwagon of a populist local issue and it's backfired on him. Whether he genuinely believed in Falmer or it was "votes at any cost", who knows? At least it gives voters who believe in Falmer living in the Kemptown constituency a straight choice now.

The mere fact he resigned over the issue, undoing his ambition to become an MP, does lead me to believe he honestly wants Falmer. He could still stand as an independent, thereby splitting the Tory vote...

Not that I ever had any intention of voting Tory anyway, but this has just confirmed my opposition to them.

Pricks.

The unfortunate problem is that there is a choice of:

Tory who dont want Falmer
Lib Dem who dont know what they do want on anything or any issue
Labour who have completely f...ed up the country.

Where do you go from here?

What a load of wishy-washy BOLLOCKS.

"We feel match days will be a big problem in many parts of the constituency..." Well I am just ACHING for a Tory candidate to turn up on my doorstep so I can discuss, in great detail, exactly what this "big problem" will be on match days, and precisely where these "many parts" are that will supposedly have these problems.

Absolutely pathetic how these things just turn into one big political football.

Labour brought us back to Withdean and hopefully Labour are doing what they can to get us Falmer. It's suicide for them and their vote here if they don't and I bet they know it.

The problem is the Kemptown Tories; they are a law to themselves.

Many of the councillors have been, and will be councillors until they die. There is little chance of them being voted out in Ovingdean, South Woodingdean, Rottingdean, Saltdean etc. Thus they don't really give a dam.:(

However, the new candidate, whoever he/she may be will support Falmer. Central Officer will fully brief any successful candidate, and they will be made aware locally that anyone who opposes Falmer will not become the MP for Brighton Kemptown.

Not exactly the best political argument there, Old Man Tory. You have attempted to quote two parties' shortcoming on a local level, and one on a national level.

If Labour f***ed up the country, it's because they inherited such a complete and utter wasteland from the Tories, and still need to undo 18 years of social destruction. No matter how much Labour may or may not have f***ed up the country (and they haven't really), they are a damn site better than those twats in blue rosettes. I wouldn't trust the Tories to open a can of baked beans that was already open.

So, putting some LOCAL reasoning into the argument, there is a choice of

• Tory who doesn't want Falmer
• Lib Dem who whether he supports Falmer or not is blighted by his constituency neighbour
• Labour who supports Falmer

Of course, there are many more issues at stake should you wish to vote for an MP (rather than a party) than are listed here, but if you decide to base it on Falmer only, then as Des Turner stated, there is no mileage in voting Tory.

Maybe the risk of a stadium at Sheepcote Valley should be pressed upon the Kemp Town tories in order for them to have a change of heart on the issue. Especially as they seem to have no real reason to oppose it.

You will find that Geoffrey Theobald Councillor for Patcham is the likely candidate.

He was the candidate preferred by the Woodingdean and Rottingdean councillors before the selection process.

The only problem is that he has made pro-Falmer statements in the past. I'm sure they will see the light of day when his selection is announced.

That saved me an awful lot of typing:thumbsup:

Let's also remember that it was a Tory controlled B&H council that continually held back the Albion and B&H Tories were anti Withdean almost to a man/woman. It is only since they saw 61,000 votes cast for Falmer that they began pretending to be Albion friendly.
