Vote for Falmer in Radio Four Straw Poll

BBC Radio Four's Straw Poll programme - the summer stand-in for Any Questions comes from Falmer this week. It's a debate about the acceptability of development in the countryside.

Roz and I went to the recording on Wednesday evening.

Nick Clarke, the presenter, introduces the programme by telling everyone that they've come to Sussex University because it's close to the site chosen for the Albion's new stadium. The panel of speakers then wander off into a discussion about climate change, global warming and the acceptability (or otherwise) of wind farms.

If you can stick with this stuff, you'll hear me chipping in from the floor with a reminder that the stadium site is hardly taking up green and pleasant land anyway and that tens of thousands of people want the stadium built and the planning process needs to take their views into account.

Nick Clarke then asks whether this is a controversial issue locally.

Sundry green panellists then agree that the Albion needs a stadium, until a NIMBY chirps up with the observation that we don't - because we've just lost two football matches.

The producer then - sensibly - interrupted the recording with the words "That's enough football!"

And it's back to global warming.

If you can't be bothered to listen, just vote YES by phoning 09001 800 311 between 8.50pm on Friday and 2.20pm on Saturday.

I don't want to spoil the excitement, but the studio audience voted YES to the motion. Which is good news.

Typical bloody NIMBYs. Trying to make a non-argument due to the lack of facts to support their side :censored:.
I HATE NIMBYS

May I also suggest that some of the more eloquent people here  are sitting by their phones following the Saturday repeat of the programme for "Straw Poll Talkback" at 2pm... the fact that it's on just before a match could give a few NIMBYs the opportunity to look like they are a majority...

If its a debate about sustainable development, the environment, global warming etc - I would hope that some mention was made of the transport issue. We should be stressing Falmer's use of existing public transport facilities.

Some amusement was to be had watching Lord B make short work of the NIMBYs when the programme had ended.

While the rest of the participants wandered away, Farmer Carr - with a wild gleam in his eye - positively FELL on him and a few minutes of wildly uninformed gesticulation followed. Fortunately I was able to capture some of the action...

HERE

For a man so keen to make a public exhibition of himself, he came over remarkably coy when asked to pose for a press picture and promptly bolted in a duckpond direction. Apparently, he doesn't need "publicity" for his cause. Which is odd considering how quick he was to crack open the premature champagne the other week.

Have just looked at the pictures and was quite suprised having never seen him I imagined that Tom Carr was a doddery old man in his late 70s 80s wanting to harp on about 'the good old days'. Will phone in my vote

Well he can certainly "harp on". But he always plays the same old tune and the repertoire is as tedious as it is out of tune with reality.

The thing about Tom Carr is that every time he opens his mouth, it becomes more and more obvious that we are going to get our stadium at Falmer.

He really cannot grasp that sites like Brighton Station, Shoreham Harbour, Corals Stadium, Waterhall, Toads Hole Valley and Sheepcote Valley have NEVER been realistic options - or that Sheepcote Valley will create real traffic congestion in Falmer. As it happens, there was a City Council planner there on Wednesday evening, and she tried to put him right as well. But to no effect.

Tom Carr: "With the greatest of respect, you look like a cross between Richard Branson and Father Christmas, so I'm going to point my finger at you in a comically over-dramatic, posturing sort of way."

Lord Bracknell: "With the greatest of respect, you look like a cross between a c*** and a w*****."

:D :D :D :D :D :clap2:

Superb! I can almost feel a quick edit coming on...

By the way, the phone lines for Straw Poll Talkback (a phone in based on the debate you've just heard) open after tonight's broadcast and close at 2.20pm tomorrow. So you can attempt to 'book' your call this evening or in the morning, without having to sit by the phone trying to get through at the last minute.

Apparently they don't always have as many callers as you might think, so if you've got something to say it's worth a go. ;)

What cheeses me off with farmers in general ( probably this one too), is that when it suits them, when they need to top up the old retirement fund, off they go and sell a few fields to a housing developer, and often the planners have no objection, well that is what happens here in Somerset.

Is it that he doesn't understand what the objections and problems are with other sites. Because he is just thick.

or is it that he doesnt want to understand.

If its the former you will have a job on your hands to persuade him to see sense the second is easier to overcome by ridicule.
