Living rooms look so bare these days. The vinyl display used to be an important part of the decor, and it said a lot about you. Now everyone seems to have put it away.

You are correct. Me and my wife had some shelves built to hold and showcase our CD collection. It covered one wall and went around the corner onto another. It held around 1400 CDs. All of my purchases were on show, so I had some awkward moments when people spotted Marillion or Bon Jovi and my coolness was blown.

All of this is currently in storage :-(

iTunes helped me rediscover music in a new way. Vinyl helps you explore past masters you had forgotten and reconnect with the idea of the album.

Not only that, but you can spend a happy hour leafing through LP covers in old record shops, and even happier times reading lyrics printed inside the album covers or just admiring album artwork.

Absolutely. Mostly buy second hand vinyl these days, digging up long lost gens or finding new ones. Buy and sell on eBay and regularly rummage in charity shops/jumble sales etc

Still use a Sony hifi I've had for years.

I buy about 6 albums a month on vinyl. It's expensive but I'm so glad I've gone back to it. I have barely no emotional attachment to any of my CDs (and I've got 100s) - they tend to stay in a draw.

Can I be nosey and ask what you buy? Are they 2nd hand? Or new? What were the last long players you purchased?

I'm looking to buy a deck for a birthday present to myself and have a few bits that I've picked up on vinyl recently. A lot of my favourite producers are releasing their stuff on vinyl or digitally only atm and I've got a load from when I previously had a deck. There's something more relaxing about listening to a record.

I bought a deck 2011, then got all my vinyl down from the loft and now only buy LPs in vinyl where possible...the thing I like is, you have to listen to the whole package and not just flick to the tracks you know. Then sure anough a track you did not think much of grows on you and becomes a fav.

I need to visit these vinyl shops in Brighton, can we have a list? (Me coming from the dark side)

Also have you all noticed that the price of vinyl in second hand shops has gone up from 10p 4 years ago to £3.00 now!!

Rarekind Records at the bottom of Trafalgar Street for all you hip hop/funk/soul plus RK Bass upstairs that mainly deals with jungle but the lady who works there knows her reggae onions too.

I have gone digital these days and buy mostly from 7digital United Kingdom | High quality DRM-free MP3 music downloads

I do have 6 of those album cover picture frames (mentioned earlier) in my hall and have started trawling through second hand shops for new art work.

When I got together with the lovely Mrs Orange she came complete with a record box full of albums... but no turntable. So a Pro-ject Debut III was quickly added to my Hi-Fi, and gets the occasional run-out - it was very useful when she wanted to listen to some P.W.E.I. before she went off to a gig of theirs at the end of last year, and more recently for playing old kids music albums for Junior Orange.

I quite like dropping into Ben's Collectors Records in Guildford from time to time, and am constantly amazed by how many people there are always in there.

Forgot to add, that although I have gone digital I still buy the whole album in preference to single tracks. I can't get my head around this, I just like one song thing. How do you know ? Unless an artist has been around for decades and you have had plenty of exposure to their music, it just seems a bit blinkered to me.

That is the joy of albums really. You buy something for one or two tracks... you might not even like the rest on a first hearing and it gets relegated to the bottom of the pile... then sometime later you listen again and think "why have I not been listening to this more?"

Cheers. It's that Atoms for Peace AMOK album which has got me in this conundrum. It looks an absolute work of art and it comes with either a free CD or a download so I get the best of both worlds.

For the record I'm 44 (no pun intended).

anybody else get most of their stuff off Soundcloud now? My old PC died on me (including a lot of music I had bought/ripped from CDs) new laptop has no cd drive so have started my music collection again from scratch

happily spendhours going through artists i like, looking at what they/other fans have favourited and by the end of it finding music i'd never have heard of previously

the clincher is most of it is available to legally download for free (all mostly high quality mp3s too) as loads of people on there are unsigned/do it for a hobby, but are actually very good (for example: Let Me Breathe by Samuel Truth on SoundCloud - Hear the world’s sounds)

I recently have gone back to Vinyl. Dont mind CDs, but downloads on their own really irritate me. I like the idea of once buying something, that I can actually hold it. With vinyl and CDs you get to see the artwork, a lyric sheet and who produced it, where it was recorded, the thank you etc. I read the lot. You cant get that on a download.

I'm not anti CD, cos I can do all of the above. Vinyls are much bigger, so the artwork stands out. Plus I've noticed that the thickness of vinyl is so much thicker than before.

A well looked after Vinyl will also last as long as a CD, and of course it cant be deleted. I also feel that i listen to a vinyl record more. With a CD or download i will frequently skip a song if I'm not immeditaely hooked by the track. I never give a song a chance. With Vinyl i will listen to a record side all the way through, meaning that some songs that I may not immeditaely like, may grow on me.

Obvioulsy you cant play a vinyl in the car, but many come with CDs or download codes, so you get best of all worlds.

Pretty much only buy vinyl now as it's so much prettier than CD's.

There's been a bit of retro-fetish thing going on for releasing on tape in the psych & noise underground for a number of years now. Labels such as Old English Spelling Bee, Night People, Not Not Fun etc... It's a bit silly if you ask me, tapes were a poor format even when they were popular but there's no accounting for nostalgia.

The triple gatefold 2double LP foil embossed one? Yum. Not only is it a lovely piece of work, it won't diminish in price should you want to get rid in 20 years time. If it's a CD it's next to worthless the moment you buy it.
Some albums dont have a CD or digital download - that's just lazy (and bloody annoying) if you ask me. My mate in the record industry said it's to stop sharing, which is a little odd given the vinyl buyers are the ones who are keeping the industry alive by not sharing.

For the record I'm 5 years younger. Grandad.
