Bloom usually surprises us with a manager from left field but in terms of the managers we know about there is one outstanding candidate and that is Andoni Iraola.

I see he is only on a 2-year contract at Bournemouth. It took time for his methods to work with the squad he had - no wins in his first 9 Prem matches, just 3 draws and 6 defeats but since then it's 11 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats, i.e. the sort of form we strung together with MacAllister and Caicedo in midfield. He's done that with Ryan Christie and Lewis Cook.

They've had bit of a wobble in recent weeks and I wonder whether that is because they were mathematically safe from the drop. Had they beaten Luton they'd be above us. Iraola will be questioning the players' hunger.

What it doesn't say is thet he was in Arsenal's system before he went to Como................don't know about your dig at me re JPVH....one of many players who have developed under RDZ.

I imagine that on a shortlist somewhere in September 2022, Andoni Iraola's name sat a line or two below Roberto De Zerbi's. It may have been the case that it all happened a bit soon for him to be in the picture, but he was a known entity last season. He was Leeds' first choice to replace Ted Lasso last February.

At the same time, and whilst I'm a big fan, I can't see us successfully approaching the manager of a side who really, aren't that far behind us.

No. He’s going to be a contender in the future, but he’s not ready yet.

Marc Van Bommel is one we should have on our short list though, especially given how his teams draw players in and play out from the back.

If you want genuine continuity there's only one choice.

Yes, to go back to my previous point, he had an outrageously strong side in the Championship. His top scorer in the English second tier is now a key player for Bayer Leverkusen. My argument is that Burnley's successful season under him was predicated on a truly wonderful defensive record - something that shouldn't be lessened at all. The fact they outscored their xG by 21 goals implies that whilst the players were prolific in the moment, the style going forward wasn't as much.

As a comparison, we outscored our xG by 1 goal last season at exactly the same goals per game as Burnley had in the Championship.

He also inherited an incredibly strong side at Anderlecht (Joshua Zirkzee and Christian Kouamé up front is a top European strike partnership) and was only able to get them to finish 3rd and 4th, in a league they should be dominating, with a 45% win rate.

I'm not for a second saying that Burnley weren't superb in destroying the Championship last season, I just think that if you look at the stats, there is a lot that points to Kompany not being able to replicate those numbers season over season. And I don't think we have the players or budget to give Kompany the foundation he would need to overperform offensively in the Premier League.

I think there is a good chance Burnley could survive - Forest are on the verge of freefall after losing against Everton, the Luton bubble has burst and Sheff Utd are already dead in the water.

Burnley do have a tough run in - away to Man U - home to Newcastle - away to Spurs

But so do Forest - home to Man City - home to Chelsea - but they do have a chance with an away game at Sheff Utd. Forest need a result in Sheffield.

The final game for both is Burnley at home to Forest which could decide who goes down. Burnley need to pick up one more point than Forest in the next three games (goal difference favours Forest) - and then win the game against Forest. Burnley picking up a result at Old Trafford on Saturday would put massive pressure on Forest and they could buckle completely.

I think Kompany has done a really good job with Burnley with a limited squad and it will be a major feather in Kompany's cap if they survive. If they do go down I think they will bounce straight back up because they are unlikely to lose any players and are far stronger than they were when promoted a year ago.
