I was given an 8 pint barrel of "Revolution Lager" for Christmas, about which their web-site says "Just add water and 72 hours later tap gloriously refreshing beer or cider straight out the front of the keg into your very own Victor’s glasses".

Does anyone know if it's as awful as it sounds? Should I give it away, or give it a try?

Give it a try. I'm really curious to know if you can make something drinkable, that easy.

Beer OR cider? Out of the same barrel - or is it left to the person drinking it to decide which it tastes more like?

Get a slightly off pint of Coors Light somewhere (that clearly has NOTHING else available) and compare to a particularly poor cider (older sweet cider types, not the nuclear sugar ones like Orchard Thieves now) and you may have trouble identifying which is which. This must be the same!

No, this is supposed to be lager, but they do other barrels, I just copied that from the website! I suspect it will taste like Bulldog's piss, but that would be difficult to market.

I would question the level of alcohol that can be produced in 72 hours. I brew my own beer and generally speaking depending on variety of yeast it needs an absolute minimum of a week to convert the sugars to alcohol.

I suppose if the package contained about a quarter of a pint of pure alcohol - plus a bit of beer flavouring - adding 8 pints of water would give you about 3% alcohol in whatever muck you ultimately drank. Or just add 3 pints of water, not 8, and make your own Special Brew or White Lightning!

I think the clue is in the name. It's called Revolution Lager because it's revolting.
