I can't find a replay now I don't have x. From the still that is out there it looks like both are offside, but if the scorer is onside then the other player making an action is enough for offside.

I don't understand why this took so long. In the stadium I felt it harsh towards southampton.

It didn't need 4 mins and 30 seconds to sort out.

The 'original' decision was not to allow it - lino flagged it as offside, even if he did take his time.

The VAR delay wasn't about the Armstrong involvement. It took them about 4 minutes to work out that the scorer was onside with lines and so on. Then about 10 more seconds to rule that Armstrong was offside and interfering. If they had done it the other way round it would have been done and dusted in no time.

I know all of that but I don't care. Flag going up so late means the crowd have no idea what is going on. Forensic checking of 3 different actions is not what football is about. I worry about every goal we score now. Watching back how onsite Mitoma was shows how ridiculous that is. But I am not paid to watch the line so who knows what VAR is going to decide. Spontaneity of celebrations has gone in pursuit of "perfection" - and gets nowhere near. If the officials thought Armstrong was offside then put the flag straight up. Don't spent 20 seconds jabbering away on headsets no-one else can hear and then do it. And then 5 minutes doing things only the TV watchers might know what is happening - and that is if the commentator relays it. Friday night kick off with 5 minutes where 30000 have no idea what is happening. If that is a sport designed to benefit the live audience then I despair. The pandering to TV is killing it as a live spectacle.

That inactive player nonsense needs to be scrapped, seems to be used as a wild card to favour the big teams.

If you're offside and in the penalty area, you're interfering with play. Simples.

The offside player was making a deliberate run to the near post taking JPVH with him and causing Bart to have to take up a near-post position. If that’s not affecting the game then what is?

JPVH complained to the ref immediately.

This! It’s a point gained the way the game actually played out but two points dropped if you believe as I do that Downes should have been sent off

Particularly galling in light of Baleba missing the game following what happened last week. Think he very likely would have made the difference last night.

Surely PGMOL need to do something about consistency, makes refs a laughing stock.

Doubt it, if the rule is an offside player can't interfere with play, then whats to moan about? Not sure why this is such a big deal now we know what rule was being applied. I just wish it was clearer at the time and didn't take so long.

If we do our job - like making our top half PL team scoring two goals against a Championship squad - we don't have to rely on the ref doing the job for us.

Most competent refs are going to - when they have the choice - talk to a player to keep it 11v11 rather than getting in there and deciding the game.
Deciding the game will instead be done by the football teams involved and we decided not to win the game, which is our responsibility and our problem, and only our problem.

Blaming the ref for us not being good enough is similar to incels blaming women for not getting laid.

Much preferred the ref talk after the Bournemouth game. When we do our job it gets less pathetic to moan about someone else not doing theirs.

I have worried about every goal we score since I attended my first match at the Goldstone in 1969.

I get your point about the confusion and length of time. However, it's ridiculous to suggest that their player put Bart off in any way. Have you seen the post match interview with Bart? He admitted we got dead lucky even with the interviewer ' feeding ' him the opportunity to claim that he was put off. He wasn't and even down cast after the result Bart wasn't prepared to bullshit!

Not sure if it's been mentioned early in the thread as I can't be bothered to read all the posts however, the reason the goal was ruled out is exactly the same as the goal that MacAlister scored against Leicester when it was deemed that Mwepu, in an offside position, had attempted to play the ball but missed thus ruling the goal out.

Yes - he says that it should only be for 'clear and obvious' errors and subjective things should be left to the on-field ref. Then goes on to say that VAR should have overturned the on-field ref's subjective decision!
