[Albion] Van Hecke out on loan dilemma?

We were hit very hard over the months of February and March as our central defensive suffered a number of changes and our form disappeared. Burn had gone, Duffy wasn’t convincing, Dunk suffered loss of form and suspension and Webster had a groin injury.

Potter tried to implement a back 4 but the losses started piling up. Eventually Cucu would be exceptionally transformed into a LCB and from April, we were brilliant.

But, we really struggled when Webster was injured and Burn was gone.

Duffy, Østigård and Cucu have all left permanently but our back 3 currently looks great. However, with Van Hecke rumoured to be off to the Makems in parallel with a suspected Championship bidding war for the Clarke (the Athletic says we’ve turned down bids) can Colwill cover the cracks or do we need another in?

I fear that with an injury to Webster and maybe another Dunk suspension or loss of form, we could be in trouble again.

Surely there is another ‘incoming’ planned at the back?

Assuming MC also leaves we must have some kind of plan. Either there’s a very convincing u23 or one of the first team squad is more versatile than we’ve realised. No way are we going into the first half of the season with Colwill and that’s it as cover. Doesn’t make sense.

None of it ever makes sense until it does.. Great club this now.

It's either Offiah as 5th choice or perhaps we bring in a defensive midfielder who also plays centre back.

Yeah that Grrillitch chap would’ve been ideal but he’s obviously a bit of a fruit loop.

Not according to the Athletic. Surely he’d have made the bench today if he is going to be playing first team football this season?

Not necessarily. We've had similar numbers in terms of positions on the bench for each match so far this season. We've had 3 defensive options on the bench for each match, with Van Hecke missing today his replacement was Estupinan. With Sarmiento also out we decided to go with Maupay to give us a second attacking option on the bench (possibly a third attacking option depending how you'd clarify Mitoma).

Yeah that Grrillitch chap would’ve been ideal but he’s obviously a bit of a fruit loop.

He attempted to negotiate his own contract with his old man at several clubs. But he failed the dickhead test here unfortunately.

However, he has re-hired a former agency to do the talking now. I wonder if the club were offered a large slice of Austrian humble pie, they’d have a chat again? He seems to be top class.

I actually believe that the club have a solution which is why Van Hecke is getting another development year.

Let’s wait and see.
