None of those LBs are currently available to us other than the midfielders masquerading as full backs. Baleba should never play fullback. Lamptey has stopped being a footballer and is a training dummy for our physios. Solly, who knows if he will ever be back.

So are actual options are:

LB:

1. Pervis (when fit)
2. Hinsh/My Mum

RB

1. Veltman
2. Hinsh/My Mum
I'm sure your mum is a good full back, but your post assumes we aren't signing Ferdi which we clearly will if Barco is allowed to go on loan.

He needs to get better at defending so I think it's a good idea. Fans of his old club were saying he was good going forward, but suspect when defending. This may help him learn the defensive side of lwb.

Breaking News…..

Olivier Boscagli has played around a quarter of his career (61 games) at left back!

THE VELTMAN OF THE LEFT

Let’s tick his box ASAP if Barco is off.

Has played there / can play there / might be able to fill in and do a job

Are we being a bit scattergun in this window? Given the number of players we're prepared to buy, I kind of think we should be buying them for a particular position.

But the thread is about Barco. The more I've thought about it, the more the likelihood that it's not just a knock, the new manager doesn't fancy him. Just the same as he didn't fancy Facu. Sure they might come back in next season, but it's actually pretty rare for us that a player plays a decent number of first team games, goes on loan, then goes onto feature significantly in the first team.

It ties in with Kadioglu signing. He's coming in as a left back it seems. Veltman and Hinsh fighting for the RB spot. Both fine players, but neither of them scream modern attacking full back in the way Barco does at left back. One is a converted CB who has done very well at RB, one a converted young midfielder, again who has filled in very well

These aren't the players you're looking for.

I think it’s very unlikely we are spending another very possible club record fee for a player in the form of his life (hence signing him), who has been absolutely terrific since converting to left back - only to change his position.

Also if you read my post again mate, I explain his is right footed and plays inverted. In fact it was this very change which led to his massive improvement in form.

He is being signed as a left back. Absolutely dead cert.

Hurzeler doesn't use inverted players, look at his time at St Pauli, he always played his wingbacks on their natural side.

Although Brayan Gruda isn't a wing back, Hurzeler even said, when signing him, that we wants him to play on the left side as he wants his first touch to be inside.

Mega mega surprised by this. I thought this would be Barcos breakout season, he seemingly fits Hurzelers tactics perfectly with attacking wing backs with killer crosses.

But more importantly as everyone else has pointed out, we DESPERATELY need full backs. We are so so short in that area even with Ferdi coming in

We’ll have two modern attacking full backs when the squad is fit and we’re at full strength. Pervis on the left, Ferdi in the right.

Boscagli would be cover at LB but primarily, we want a left footed centre back who is a very good passer of the ball. We’ve not had that since Colwill left.

Pervis is back training with the squad. I expect he may get some game time against Crawley and be back in the first team for Ipswich. He is our first choice left back.
Ferdi would play right back I’d think, and be back up for Pervis. Hinshelwood may get a few games at Right back.
Pervis had a poor season last season but I’m sure that it was due to him carrying his injury. The season before that he was one of the best left backs in the league.

Many on NSC have a negative outlook on loans but this is another one that will serve us well.
He will come back improved and we use him, or his value goes up and we sell or it doesn’t go well and nothing really lost.

I seriously dislike this news. I think Barco is excellent and has some excellent qualities which he displayed well preseason.
Plus he has a bit of that South American fire which we could well do with sometimes.
At least it isn’t with a buy option but very disappointed not to see him playing for us this season if true.

Yes Pervis is good.

But he was rushed back last season, didn't ever really look right and was largely not that useful to us.

I hope to be wrong, but I think he'll be eased in much more cautiously that you're suggesting.

Also there is "back in training" and "back in training". It' will be worth watching the videos this week to see if he's playing a full part or is still on his own like Solly was.

It would be weird to loan him out given he took all of our decent set pieces in pre-season. I thought he was going to get a run in the team until at least Estupinan was back.

Like Facundo at his age he needs to be playing regular football so whilst disappointing for us is likely to be the best thing for his development and at Sevilla he is getting regular football at a level that is befitting of his talent. Fully expect him to return in the summer as our first choice left back when a rejuvenated Pervis is likely to be another high premium sale.

So we aren’t learning the lessons of running out of full backs, then?

Had any of you considered that this might be made up? First tweet from an Argentine sports tabloid, picked up by a couple of internet click seekers within half an hour and everone is posting theories as to how we're going to fill his shoes. The tabloid says that the reason he's off is that he's only played 6 games, ignoring that he's played 5 of our last 7 games, started every game in pre-season and is playing under a different manager. On this evidence, I see no reason to take this seriously. I'd expect him to start on Saturday.

I thought Barco had a knock at the weekend. But he was obviously being protected from injury due to this anticipated loan.
Don’t think we didn’t play him cos he was lined up for a loan out (which has probably been a thought for a while) - hardly going to think like that - the Albion come first. If we’d wanted him, he’d have played.

It's definitely not made up. Even Fab has confirmed it.
