according to Twitter apparently Boca are going to reject the $10m + 10% so we can offer $10m and activate the buyout, which seems a bit strange?

According to Twitter, we are the only ones in for Barco. My stab in the dark here is that Valentin & his agent have made their choice.

No point in a big club offering Boca the buyout if Valentin’s then going to blow them out for little old Brighton!

By bidding we’re offering Boca a potentially better deal than simply exercising the buyout clause. Given this has ‘broken’, quite possibly indicates it’s a done deal as far as us and the player are concerned - if Boca refuse the bid, we’ll simply activate the release clause anyway. Pretty clever move by the club if so.

Surely the club could just meet the amount in the clause and STILL offer a 10% sell-on fee? Not my money, but it's not a HUGE amount extra to splash out (relatively speaking).

Boca might be rejecting it because according to reports from here before today they think they can get Barco to agree to renew his contract with a slightly higher release clause. They know he's probably leaving this window anyway, but if he renews he'd leave Boca with a bit more money

As the tweet says though, considered more respectful to make a bid - makes sense to me. Suspect the mechanics of meeting a release clause are different and perhaps not open to any negotiation

Maybe, but surely it would be even MORE respectful (if allowed) to just meet the clause (for the sake of a few quid (again, relatively speaking)) and offer a sell-on fee? But, as you say, there's almost certainly more to it than that!

The release clause is effectively the amount required to pay out and end the contract prematurely.

So there would be no subsequent agreement between Boca and Brighton, for a sell on to be inserted into.

Suspect personal term discussions happened a long time ago. Or certainly it would have been established whether the lad was interested in coming to us or not.

From what I can gather here, I think the idea is that he currently has a $10m release clause, but if he signs the new contract on the table, that will be raised to $14m sometime next week. Brighton offered $10m + 10% sell on now in the hopes of getting this done before the new contract goes into effect and as a gesture of good will to Boca. If they don't go for it, they'll try and sneak in a straight $10m offer before the new contract is signed by Barco.
