The best Grand Slam of the year has started with the late night drama at Flushing Meadows.

Lleyton Hewitt lost a five-set thriller against Paul-Henri Matthieu. The first time the Aussie has lost in the first round since 2003. Apart from Andre Agassi I've never seen anyone give more effort on a tennis court than Lleyton but his best days are behind him. If you had Hayley from Home & Away as your wife you could be forgiven for a lack of energy.

Best of luck to Andy Murray. I really think this will be his maiden Grand Slam title.

Maria Sharapova to win the ladies title.

Yes, he does give it everything, but I personally would say Roddick pips him in those stakes - for me, he has the biggest heart on court. Tournament should be interesting though, Baltacha even won her round 1 match.

Cracking match between Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka. One set all - a tie break each. It's going to be a late night. Far too knackered to stay up for it though.

I think Murray's a bit knackered too.

Amen, Durlston! I would stay up but I'm just too knackered. Brilliant match though, both blokes really going for it and though there's a slight lack of really quality shots, what it is is showing the desire and committment they both have to get through. Proper sportsmen playing a proper sport with proper emotion.

How long has the injury time out been now? The strapping has to affect Wawrinka's movement but I hope the match is not won by default.

Why do you consider it to be the best grand slam?

Yeah he doesn't look too agile out there does he. This is the tournament I really worry about Murray winning. It can't be too many more attempts before his time has gone, so a relatively early exit this year would be a massive plus.

He's British and gives 100% effort. You can't hide your emotions on a tennis court. I hope Andy wins a Grand Slam. He was in tears after the Australian Open final to Federer and it shows how much it means to him. Did you see any England players crying after the World Cup defeat to Germany?

The diff is big though - Andy Murray doesn't represent Britain at all, not in the slightest. He represents Andy Murray and that's that. Why he even wears a blue shirt, in the same shade as the Scotland flag (and he isn't representing Scotland either). Nope, can't quite compare the disappointment and shame of our WCF exit to Murray losing a tennis final really.

You can feel the atmosphere filtering through more at Flushing Meadows than the middle class snobs of Wimbledon and Roland Garros. The Australian Open gets ridiculously hot and is impossible to watch with the time difference.
