£25 for 4x4s in London

London mayor Ken Livingstone today announced plans to raise the congestion charge to £25 for so-called "Chelsea tractors".
Following a consultation, congestion charge rates in the capital will vary based on road tax bands from A (100g CO2 per KM) to G (over 225g CO2 per KM).

Drivers of the least polluting cars will receive a reduction on the current £8 daily charge, while those which emit the most C02, such as many Jeeps and SUVs, will pay a much higher price, up to £25.

The mayor asked Transport for London to come up with new proposals to amend the congestion charge.
The current scheme, he said, had been a great success in reducing traffic levels and the revenue raised has been pumped into the public transport system.

National campaign group the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s, welcomed the prospect that one of its major goals would be achieved.

Alliance spokesperson Sian Berry said: "There is simply no place for these monsters in our cities...our report to the mayor last month demonstrated that a higher charge could deter up to 40% of 4x4s from coming into central London."

But Angie Bray, the leader of the Conservative group on the London assembly, said the proposal was "a painful way forward" and warned that the move could leave families stranded and damage small business.

"Cutting pollution is a good thing but this change will hit small businesses and families, both of whom have to use larger vehicles because of there circumstances," she said.

Ms Bray suggested that reducing the charge during periods when the roads are quiet would be a much better way to cut congestion and therefore emissions.

Paul Watters, head of roads and transport policy at the AA Motoring Trust, accused backers of the scheme of being prejudiced against drivers.

"The hardest hit are often drivers who are trying simply to go about their lives in the most efficient and cost-effective way," he said.

Any changes would affect the existing zone plus the western extension and will be subject to extensive public and stakeholder consultation.

Mr Livingstone has pledged not to make a final decision until after the consultation and any change would come in "perhaps as early as 2008 but certainly not as late as 2009".

I believe that v sign should be for those who care so little about the environment that they'd actually buy something that will destroy it 5 times quicker than if they had bought a honda civic.

No no, you're forgetting. Their little cherubs simply MUST be escorted to and from school and all around town in a fully armoured 22ft battletank with wheels the size of Somerset, and shiny chrome cowchaser bars on the front grill that closely resemble the giant electrified t-rex fence in Jurassic Park.

Its for their SAYFE-TY
(but bugger everyone elses)

f***ing bleeding heart bedwetting liberals

Yes, so lets ban vans, pick ups, HGV's and, particularly, any shit car over 10 years old...... oh and not forgetting aircraft - nasty polluting things. Anyway I am trading my Shogun in for a new Volvo C70 D5 - only 193g CO2 per KM, thus doing my bit for the environment, unlike the Americans, Chinese, Indians and Australians.

Chelsea tractors are much less safe than proper cars too. Good.

Difference being, vans, pick-ups, HGV's and aircraft serve a specific purpose and do a specific necessary job. 4x4's for townies quite clearly don't (apart from massaging egos and killing pedestrians).

If it is a reasonable distance to school, say less than a mile, then make the little bleeders walk. We get stories in the press about children suffering from obesity and illness associated with it, having a bracing walk on the way to and from school won't cure the problem but it is a start. All we need to do then is pursuade parents not to feed little Johnny on artery clogging junk food.

What is a 'f***ing bleeding heart bedwetting liberal' anway? Or do is the best you can do by way of thinking you're being insulting? Anyway you're totally missing the point.

HGVs, pickups and vans generally have a purpose in the cities, and do not make unnessary one-mile trips with Tarquin and Cressida in tow. These little kids can be safely taken to school in far less obnoxious, gas-guzzling vehicles than these if absolutely necessary. The number of these bitches who turn up in a 4x4 outside the school I live above pisses me off royally, as I know they have come from four streets away.

4x4s in cities serve one purpose only. They're for people who simply MUST follow fashion, bollocks to everyone else because they wouldn't be seen dead in anything else. Their poor little pathetic egos. They're nothing more than a female version of the penis extension.

This dickhead always trots out this kind of horseshit for the poor hard done-by motorist. What he is saying is aboslute 24-carat shit, and if he stopped and thought about what he was saying, he would realise it.

How can driving a f***ing dangerous, pointless and bloody expensive 4x4 through rush hour traffic in central London be consdiered efficient and cost-effective?

I'm just GAGGING for the day Brighton & Hove Council brings in the Congestion Charge here. Greatest single improvement to the town centre they could ever introduce. Bring it ON! :clap2:

Are you serious?

There is no way my children will ride on a bus unless they are fitted with proper belts and car seats. Unfortunately this country is incredibly backward in child restraints and passenger safety so I doubt that will happen in my kids life times.

I drive a 4 x 4, would be happier driving something smaller but I can't fit the car seats across a car and am not about to ditch them in favour of being a bit more environmentally friendly, my kids come first.

We just went yesterday and ordered a brand spanking new 4 x 4. We have a looong wait until it arrives though.
