University of Gloucester / shire. Help needed.

I'd advise you to check out the financial situation there. It has been in a mess for quite a while. A lot of people think some Universities will go bust when higher fees kick in. This is one of the places highly at risk. Do a google search and check it out. Detailed analysis was done by the lecturers' union (UCU). Well worth a look.

The campus Scott and I attended has been sold and there are koney issues...

The sports campus is Oxtalls i think which is on the outskirts of Gloucester. Gloucester is a shit hole really, quaint but nothing for students and the pubs/clubs are full of neanderthals.
Cheltenham is nicer and the women are hot. It's quite expenisve (though not compared to Brighton prices).
It depends what your kid wants...personally i'd want to go somewhere a bit more exciting- Bristol, Sheffield, Manchester etc.
It's a lower tier University.

Here speaks someone who has probably never lived here, some of the post is close to reality but much of it isn't.

The centre of Cheltenham is very nice, but at a cost, the outskirts are largely utter toilet where even pit-bulls go round in pairs. Chops is spot on with his assessment of Oxstalls, it is in a nicer part of town, far removed from the rougher bits...the area in the docks where the college has accommodation is being redeveloped and is starting to look pretty smart. As for the neanderthal thing, if you get in a fight in Gloucester it will be with fists, in Cheltenham you are more likely to get sliced up...I know which option I prefer!

I have lived in Gloucester for just over seven years, yes it is cheap and a bit rough around the edges, but the people are warm friendly and welcoming with few pretentions...far better than Cheltenham actually!

All Pitville students are moving to Park, some Park students (tourism, events and some others I think) are moving to Oxstalls.

Sheffiled have announced that they won't consider any applications until after the UCAS deadline - other do it differently, but I know Sheffield have waited. TRHK Jr has had an offer (Hertforshire) two rejections (Warwick/Bristol) and is waiting on two (Sheff/York).

Maybe they are now, but I received mine from Sheffield on the 23rd of November, only a week after my application was processed

I studied at St Pauls 10 years ago when it was a college. Loved Cheltenham and surrounding countryside, locals were fine and although not relevant met friends for life. Was very sports minded when I was there, probably changed since though. Often go back to Cheltenham since many students stayed, so can't be that bad!

I lived in Cheltenham for 6 years from the age of 21 and spent my teenage years 10 miles from both Glos and Chelt. But yeah, good guess.
Oh, and my gf went to the very university.

Thanks for the info,please keep it coming. He had had a look at a few such as Chester,Lancaster (which i think is well rated ?) Liverpool (edge hill) plus a few others. I dont want him to go to Uni of cent/lancs or staffs uni (stoke-on trent) Gloucester as i remember is a decent place to live & learn. However why offer him a place now ? It is mid Jan,why not later ?

Its not early at all. I've had 4/5 of my offers in already.

That says a lot about the area actually. Around half of all the people I know who went to Uni there still live in or around the area.

One of my sons was there from 1999 to 2003, doing Sports Science/Management. Started as C & G College and finsished as a Uni. He was at Cheltenham and stayed all the time in flats in the terraced streets to the north of the town - probably next to some of the roughest areas but hey, that is student life. He enjoyed it tremendously and could have got a job down there. One advantage was the 'placement year' (third year) where the college fixed him up with Cheltenham Town's Football In The Community. So he spent a year getting coaching experience, and getting involved with their academy plus the odd kickabout!

pitville was fantastic - good su bar, the most angry woman in the world serving food in the refectory and a nice walk up through the park to get there from town

having visited a fair few of my friends at their various uni's, cheltenham is a very good place to go. the uni itself is obviously f***ed financially, but in terms of living there id recommend it very highly. plenty of student nights out, cheap deals to watch the rugby and football and of course the races, with the festival in particular being the highlight of the year

i lived in st pauls as well and my local pub was one of the more dodgy ones around (being able to buy weed freely from in full view of the bar was one fine example of that), but the people were essentially good fun and friendly even if they did look like pikie, dole queue scum on first impressions

My Dad did his (PE) Teacher Training there when it was called St Pauls.

i lived in st pauls as well and my local pub was one of the more dodgy ones around (being able to buy weed freely from in full view of the bar was one fine example of that), but the people were essentially good fun and friendly even if they did look like pikie, dole queue scum on first impressions

I'd echo those sentiments. St Pauls gets a bad rep but it's got a 70% student population and the bulk of the remaining 30% is families. There are a few council houses down one particular street but they're being knocked down and replaced so there are gradually fewer pikey's about. In four years living in Cheltenham I only once had a confrontation with a 'local', and it was a pair of 15 year old track suited scumbags who were shouting abuse across the street at me and a few of my mates because we were in fancy dress as women.
When we got a bit closer and they realised we were one third of the uni rugby team they soon f***ed off.

the other good thing about st pauls that has been overlooked here is the plethora of fast food outlets a five minute walk away, with the cherry on top of the cake being a kfc open until 3am. just don't write **** on the wall of kelly's in mayonaisse, otherwise you will find yourself hit with a length ban

yeah, been to the rugby and football quite a bit. £7 tickets so it's a steal. I've also got a temporary job at the racecourse during the Gold Cup all through the Uni, so all is good.
