Could be potatoes or carrots. It's using old cultivars of plants that have not changed for centuries.Heirlooms. Tend to use them myself rather than F1 and definitely not GM.

Ok. Now write a book about it (published by Routledge) and I'll get the cheque over.

Surely if they are on sabbatical they aren't getting paid so are applying for the grant to cover expenses while writing?

Oh yes..but it's WHAT. They're writing that is the source of all the hilarity.

“Dr Rachel Marks (School of Education) will complete a review of the current state of play of Mathematics education in the UK”

This shouldn’t take long to research. In fact I could give you the answer now if you send me 10k

Not really.

These giants will still trouser their normal salary during their "sabbatical". The £10K will fund additional expenses relating to their valuable research - in most cases this will be the cost of foreign travel somehere nice and warm.

Dr Matthew Adams (School of Applied Social Science) will prepare a monograph on the Anthropocene, a concept describing the unprecedented global impacts of human activity, threatening the survival and flourishing of countless habitats and species, including our own.

Translation = Matt Adams will take a year off to go scuba diving in the Philippines

Professor Matthew Cornford (School of Art) will produce a photographic record of 26 art school sites in North West England, towards an exhibition in Liverpool in late 2018. This project is also supported by Arts Council England.

Translation = Matt Cornford will take 26 days of the year taking photos of art schools, then take the rest of the year off.

Nice work if you can get it. I think a career in academia is calling me!

Dr Olu Jenzen (School of Media) will visit the Centre on Social Movement Studies (COSMOS) at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Florence, to pursue her work on digital activism and sexualities research.
WT everluving F? this sounds like someone being funded to troll online and watch porn as they are an expert on watching TV

Dr Anita Rupprecht (School of Humanities) will bring together a body of her existing research in a series of publication addressing the history and cultural representation of transatlantic slavery.

Why not look at the Arab slave trade? Went on for longer and a far bigger scale? But I suppose this doesn't fit in with the leftist narrative.

Anti intellectualism was a trait of Pol Pot, the extreme left Communist leader/killer of Cambodia. Taken from Mao's little red book I think. Give me £10K and I'll rent a villa near the beach in Kep, get a big bag of puff and write up on it.

You've done it. AGAIN.

Don't mock academics when you can't possible know the ins. Or outs of everything. Shirly.

I'm not sure why you're being quite so waspish.

If I started a thread on here about heritage vegetables I'd be laughed off the board.

If I then announced that I'd like you all to help fund me to have 6 months off...which is what these academics are effectively asking you to do...in order to write a book about heritage vegetables that, I imagine, I would then be payed to do..then you'd be laughing in my face, or at least I hope you would. As I would be a tit.

If you are keen on spunking cash on pointless endeavours then I'm waiting with my hand out. I can write a thesis about virtual sex or whatever you want.

Christ knows if I submitted a thesis titled like some of those guys I wouldn't even get the bugger marked.

And while I'm at it...this is a Brighton and Hove Albion fan site. It's dedicated to football. Which is a working class pursuit enjoyed by often drunken men.

We don't have a forum entitled "academia today" where Dr. hillbilly can take six months to think about war crimes and mans inhumanity to man (Dr Dunford doesn't even need to come up with s solution for his 10k btw) then fair dos. Sneering because I "don't understand academics" is..
a) judgemental. You don't know who or what I am. I might be Brian Cox for all you know.
b) assumes that I can't recognise a crock of shit when I see it.

Behave yourself or get onto the OU forum to discuss loftier things.

If Pol Pot was in charge then, I suspect, the intellectuals would have better things to discuss than a photographic retrospective of art galleries in the north west.

Calm down, dear. I was merely mocking your careless typing and juxtaposing this with your mocking of the mysterious mores of acadmic sabatticals (which sounds a bit like a Scottish lower league footy team, if you say it too quickly). I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition. But I do note the strength of your feeling on this matter.:thumbsup::lolol:
