Should be retrospective yellows to all the United players who crowded around the ref if not yellows on the day
Genuine question - can they hand out retrospective red cards for violent conduct?

It makes you wonder if VAR intervened due to the reaction of the United players though.
VAR would have checked it regardless.
And then once the ref was called over to the monitor, there was only ever going to be one decision.

Exactly. They put a completely inexperienced official in charge of VAR. His ineptitude directly influenced the outcome of the match.
Interesting article in The Athletic today saying Southampton seem to very regularly have players needing the physio between 60 and 70 minutes in matches. Then all the other Saints players go straight over to the dug outs to get gels and listen to the coaches advice. Pretty much impossible to prove anything unless they put a poster up in the changing room telling the players to do it but this suggestion would be ideal, even if the player is out of the match for just 5 minutes it would cut it all down.

The problem is that the refs are too weak.
There have been initiatives to try to stop this behaviour such as free kicks advanced 10 metres if there is any dissent as in Rugby, but the refs bottled it and stopped doing it.
If they really want to stop this behaviour, you are right. Yellow to every one of the players around the ref except the captain.
If they do it again in the match, second yellow and a red.
Also, if a player goes down and rolls around hurt, and gets treatment, he goes off to recover for 10 minutes.
(Unless as a result of a foul).
Feigning injury such as clutching their face when the contact was nowhere near that, 10 minutes sin bin.
And a week training with a Rugby team to find out what contact really means!
If we get VAR intruding into the game, as happened last night, when it was not 100% clear error, then why not use the citing process as is used in Rugby where a team can cite a player for foul play which the ref missed and it's reviewed and can sometimes result in several weeks ban?

Agreed. It's all of the above if the football authorities really want to stop it. The fact they don't doesn't just imply, it makes them complicit.

it comes from the top though. refs don't do this as they feel they have no guidance or support from the disastrous leadership at the pgmol. take this video, for example, anthony taylor, one of our best refs, would probably never do this in the prem, and yet takes a no nonsense approach when reffing in europe. you have to ask why

Manchester United have become a very dislikable side, especially the likes Fernandes and McTominey.
As a team they are currently miles away from the quality of City or Liverpool.
They must be seriously worried about Newcastle knocking them further down the pecking order in a few seasons time.
Their arrogance and entitlement will mean they remain in their rivals shadows for a while yet.

Newcastle did it under Bruce too. Goalkeeper goes down with mystery injury so ref has to stop the game. All other players go to the technical area.
