The original might be, the current one isn't.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...on_Jack.png/537px-Flags_of_the_Union_Jack.png heres both the 400 year old one and the current one along with some other stuff :p

What he said. The United Kingdom has three stages - the coronation of James V1/James 1, the union of England & Scotland, and the union of Ireland and Great Britain. All of these events have roughly a hundred years between them, hence the current flag dating only from 1801.

Well said about the Union FLAG... funny how so many people incorrectly call it the Union JACK

The Jack comes from a small version being put on the front of naval vessles when they went to sea.

Although another idea is that it was worn on the jackets of soldiers or something like that...

it is only the Union Jack when it is flying from the Jack Staff at the pointy end of a grey war canoe ;)

I quite like the new version, designed for a modern, multicultural nation:-

And the early designs for the 1606 version are worth looking at:-

If the majority of people call it the Union Jack it's the Union Jack. It's only a sad minority of pedants who actually care.

Anyway it'll be redundant soon, replaced by the glorious flag of the EU.

Of course it does Little Hampton, but then we knew that already.

There is still one current flag that uses the 1606 version of the Union Flag.

It's the flag of the Northern Lights Commissioners, who are responsible for marine navigation aids around the coastal areas of Scotland and the Isle of Man.

I get the flag bit but whats with the melting penis on the right of it.

I like your post with possible union jack/ flag designs. We tend to think of so many things as just 'being' rather than something that someone has thought about and designed. Makes it all much
more human.

Older members of NSC will no doubt remember the thread started in 2001 (by Downloaded Penguin, I think) that said something along the lines of "OK. We've raised the money for a giant flag. What should the design be?"
