Sound decision by Joe. He's not getting any younger and if he goes on eventually he will come up against someone younger, stronger, fitter and faster who will give him a real beating. There are too many old boxers around (and many who are no longer still around) who have gone on taking 'one more fight' and paid dearly for it.

Oh, and by the way, as for only fighting bums, you should check out the credentials of some of Marciano's opponents too!

With most boxing careers its all about timing...Marciano was fortunate that the 50's was short of top class heavyweights. He missed Joe Louis in his prime and retired well before Liston and Ali appeared on the scene. In title fights he defeated former champions Jersey Joe Walcott and Ezzard Charles ( good fighters but not top class ) and also knocked over Don Cockell ( British punchbag ) and Archie Moore ( Light-Heavyweight )
His career has parallels with Calzaghe in that they both fought the bigger names when they were past their prime, either through good luck or shrewd management.
The record books will show them both with unblemished records but the debate will rage on as to how good they both were, as their individual records come under scrutiny.

True great. If lamping people with your wrists scored more points what a record he would have. A proper fighter and one who will/should be remembered as a true great of British boxing. Brilliant retirement, pure class, as expected.

I have a of time for Joe. A true champion who conducted his life with a lot of dignity, humour and charm. We should applaud people like this.

I would of liked to of seen a rematch with Hopkins

Had they fought each other 4 or 5 years ago it would been a belter but other than earn more more money he had nothing to gain by fighting Hopkins again he had already beaten him once so he could only do worse snd posibly lose his unbeaten record.

As a credit to British boxing he far exceeds Fatty from Manchester or the no hoper from Bolton.

Had he not retired somebody may have talked David Haye into going back down to Light heavy weight to fight him and that would have seen his record go.

He had a point to prove. Many people like myself had hopkins up by 2 or 3 points in thier fight. By fighting him again, and beating him he would of gained much more respect. Joe always went on about the lack of respect he got throughout his carear.. IMO it is because he is worried about loosing his undefeated record.

That is one of the reasons im such a fan of Ricky's. He has said he would rather Mayweather knock him out again than to not get another crack at him.

Unlike Marciano he never actually knocked out any of the real good boxers he came across, he always beat them on points and that can be disputed.

David Haye can barely make the cruiserweight limit of 14 stone 4lbs (hence why he's now campaigning at heavyweight), so he'd have no chance in hell of making the 12 stone 7lbs light-heavy limit without removing an arm or some other appendage.

Ludicrous suggestion.
