I wonder if there is a connection between exorbitant pay at the top, and poverty wages at the bottom. Or is it just coincidence?

The Treasury would try and put a positive spin on this though, wouldn't it?

We've heard this week about the appalling employment practices of companies like BHS and Sports Direct - the 'unacceptable face of capitalism'.

And how many of the new jobs boasted by the Treasury are more low-paid dead-end jobs (in spite of the so-called Living Wage), zero-hours contracts and part-time employment, filled by people who still will struggle to make ends meet or afford a roof over their heads?

The cost of living here is just ridiculous and has spiralled out of control at an alarming rate.Many people doing average jobs were earning more 20 years ago and you could get a mortgage on that salary back then...The futures bleak for many that's for sure as company's and big bosses love paying stupid wages.

Yup. Your riches have emanated entirely from your own effort, and have nothing whatsoever to do with your parenting, schooling, the infrastructure, colleagues, government policy, etc. But you carry on thinking that individuals are sacrosanct, although some are more sacrosanct than others.

Do Tories ever listen to themselves patronising others, while having no empathy or understanding of what life is like for those less well-off than themselves? Tories always blame the low-paid, not the selfish, greedy, ruthless employers who pay poverty wages while receiving millions in salaries and bonuses themselves (Mike Ashley, Philip Green, etc).

In any conflict between employers and workers, I have never, in my whole life, heard a Tory condemn the employers; it's always, somehow, the workers fault if their pay is too low, or they are treated badly by management. Talk about blaming the victims.

Pay ratio between Britain's top CEOs and workers is 183:1 - do these bosses work 183 times as hard, put in 183 as many hours, or produce 183 times more than their staff?

I am not totally sure about the figures, but those voting Tory at election time, number anything between 10 and 13 million, give or take. That is by your reckoning one hell of a lot of people who have no idea how others live. No one disputes that the excesses of green at al are obscene but it might just be that most employers are not like that?! Perhaps you should think twice before spouting such extreme exaggerated rhetoric.

Surely it's just down to simple economics, wages go down when there is more Labour available to takes these roles and businesses aren't facing much competition for employees.

Wages go up when there is a shortage of Labour for a role and therefore employers have to pay more to get someone to join them rather than a rival.

This is why some industries have seen dramatic falls in wages, such as the building, plumbing trades, etc as more and more workers capable of doing this work have become available to employers (migrant Labour, etc)

This could help explain why poorer areas of the country voted out as they are the areas most likely to have wage deflation and housing inflation as more Labour moved into the area
