Your history isn't quite right, it's very murky anyway, so it's impossible for anyone, even experts, to get it spot on. But you are right, the US has funded groups that have gone on to become terrorist organisations. I think it would be very naive to pretend they haven't.

But Russia is helping Assad because the US, Britain, Turkey, Saudi and other Sunni states are helping the 70 factions of so called moderate rebels. The rebels are Sunni Wahhabists and ISIS are Sunni Wahhabists. Jabhat Al Nusra recently changed their name to Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham to cut ties with Al Qeada and appear more moderate, whilst praising Bin Laden. What links them all together is that they are all want their own Islamic state in Syria.

Assad, quite rightly, will not hand over his authority of the governmant and his military to some unknown Wahhabist rebel group leader.

Saudi only stuck their noice in when ISIS was well and truly rooted and established as they're all Sunni Muslims. I know. Every ME country is armed by either the US or Russia. The arms race within Syria for the past 5 years though was instigated by the countries who supported the toppling of Assad.
