I thought it was mildly interesting to see how 2 points for a win would affect the table:

Code:
Team	P	W	D	L	F	A	GD	Pts	Pts (2 for a win)
Albion	19	11	8	0	27	16	11	41	30
Boro	19	12	3	4	29	12	17	39	27
Derby	19	10	7	2	26	11	15	37	27
Hull	19	10	5	4	28	13	15	35	25
Burnley	19	9	7	3	26	19	7	34	25
Cardiff	19	7	8	4	22	18	4	29	22
S Wed	19	7	8	4	25	22	3	29	22
Brm'ham	19	8	4	7	25	22	3	28	20
Ipswich	19	7	7	5	28	27	1	28	21
Brentfd	19	8	4	7	26	25	1	28	20
Reading	19	7	6	6	26	22	4	27	20
QPR	19	7	5	7	24	25	-1	26	19
Blkburn	19	5	9	5	21	18	3	24	19

We'd be 3 points clear of third (1 win, 1 draw) and 8 points clear of seventh (4 wins)
As it is we are 4 points clear of third (1 win, 1 draw) and 12 points clear of seventh (4 wins)

So it has barely made a difference then. Worth remembering the next time someone pipes up with the "I'd rather win and lose than draw twice" cliche, as if teams actually have that choice to make.

How does the fact that a hypothetical change to 2pts for a win doesn't change the table as it stands have any affect on the theory that in reality winning once, losing once, gives us more points than drawing twice?

This. And given that we haven't lost, we're hardly a good team to test the theory out on.

It doesn't, but it does seem to show that most other teams are no more or less capable than we are of converting those draws to an even split of wins and losses. Except Middlesbrough I guess, who would be 2 points worse off but nevertheless still be above Derby on GD.

Trouble is with the I would rather win and lose then draw scenario. How would you feel if we missed out on automatic or play offs on goal difference.

Still some way to go to beat:-

"one things for certain, neither side wants a replay".

Well if that was the case why isn't the captain booting in a injury time own goal?
Could it be because both teams would rather draw and replay instead of losing?

Boro, Derby, and Hull - who have all lost games - have better goal differences than undefeated us have. Not losing doesn't guarantee that you will have a better goal difference than teams that do lose.

Because there's an implied follow up "Neither side wants a replay - they'd rather settle it today, but, of course, a replay would be preferable to elimination"

But we're less than a win ahead of 'boro, but would be a win and a draw ahead. We're 2 wins ahead of Hull, but would be 2 wins and a draw ahead.

Miss out doe to goal difference rather than miss out on points? I'm not sure what your point is. I'd rather have more points and a worse goal difference, not that that's likely with the win & lose vs 2 draws scenario.

What about 4 points for a win 3 points for a draw and 1 point if you score?

Wasn't it Jimmy Hill who managed to change the 2 points into 3 points?

I have to admit. There's not a load of logic in the 3 points. 2 points for a win seems a lot fairer.

It's probably the most sensible change in football in decades in my opinion ( much more than any change to the original offside rule we all knew and loved) It makes for the more entertaining game we have now where there is much more to be gained for not 'shutting up shop; and settling for a draw. 2 points lost at home is now more damaging than before - it can almost feel like a defeat if your rivals bag a last minute winner away from home.
