The only factor which gives X a viable commercial future is the lack of obvious alternative platforms. They are obviously there, but one would need to reach a critical mass of users to knock X off it's perch

I don't know what we should do. We definitely need some sort of beefier legislation so that platforms (and offending users) can have their arses sued off and/or imprisoned when it's been proved they've published lies. After all poor old Bozza has to constantly keep us on the straight and narrow every time there's a hint of a controversy, so why aren't other platforms subject to similar legal threats? Is it just because Musk's pockets are a tad deeper?
legistlation for platforms you dont like would have consequences for those you do. it's not the way forward. Bozza choses to be cautious because a complaint has to be at least dealt with, even if trivial. other forums have different tolerance of dealing with complaints. twitter's deep pockets do meant they dont care about substantive complaints, and Elon's direction has been more libertarian, leans into more engagement over quality. many think its too much right wing lies on there, some think there's too much left wing lies there. truth is there's an awful lot of bollocks when you let people run their mouth off.

more importantly legislating for a US based service, hosted in US would be utterly pointless gesture, protected by US 1st amendment and other law. the poster is self publishing, they are responsible, not the platform. the precedent is not holding telecoms companies liable for people using the phone to plan crime, commit slander or anything else. thats before you get into whether some thing said is even breaching any law to make the platform liable. much easier and viable in another country to target and presecute the poster for their actions and self police use of the platform.

I do worry about the state of the nation. In the past we used to moan about the 'right wing press' brainwashing people. Maybe they did, but those are now officially the 'Good Old Days'. For all their faults newspapers are at least regulated, unfortunately so few people, and certainly so few people under 30, read newspapers any more. (My son for example has never read a newspaper). Apparently nowadays most people get all their information first and foremost from social media, and to say that a lot of what they're consuming is wildly inaccurate and damaging is a massive understatement.

As an aside I think 'X' is a stupid name. As has been said a lot of people still refer to it as Twitter or X/Twitter, and also in the old days a post was called a 'Tweet'. What's it called now? A Twix?
Well said. My sons (26 and 14) have never read a newspaper and get any info from social media. The older is also more likely to watch Al Jazeera than BBC.

Yes. Lovely intellectual argument mixed with a bit of shoulder-shrugging and a sense of "Ah well, nothing we can do about it". Valid but not good enough. The current system is broken and crap on the internet has gone way beyond a few nutters broadcasting conspiracy theories to ensnare a few other idiots. The well of public discourse has been poisoned and we have to do something more forceful than just throwing up our hands and tutting loudly. Stating that Twitter/Facebook etc when consumed in the UK are not protected by the US constitution would be a start, introducing something similar to the Great Firewall of China to block unwanted traffic may have to be considered. DON'T tell me it can't be done.

The trouble is if all the decent people leave, there will be no-one to counter the posts by extremists and conspiracy theorists - which will just make things worse.
I'm not convinced that such a place is made better for the views of rational folk. I'm not convinced that such a place is good for anything really. Maybe finding lost pets or travel diversions.

NSC is a good place for fun and has been most helpful in the past. Apart from that I'll stick to my Facebook friends feed and the local bus nerds group. It's happier.

I try to avoid the groups on disused railways in Sussex. That's too much excitement.

The don't read bit is because they are the generation preferring small sound bites - neither of them will read a book unless school made them.
My older (step)son says he gets a much wider spread of international news on Al Jazeera than on BBC - yes, they will platform (for example) pro Russian/Putin supporters from time to time, but then, let's face it, we have GB News, Farage etc

I've just deactivated my Twitter account (refused to call it X). I only ever used it for Brighton news and following a few comedy and news accounts, never posted.

I've found over the past year though I've been using it like picking at a scab, you know you shouldn't, it will hurt and do no good.

Musk's behaviour this week was the final straw. I'm not allowing myself to give him any advertising revenue from my eyes.

Threads is absolute cringe. Users chase engagement by asking idiots questions which can easily be Googled - but people can't resist answering, so it 'works' (pushes crap to top).

Hoping Bluesky takes off, but haven't tried it much.

Does Threads have hashtag usage yet? That's the only reason I didn't move there a few months ago

#No

At least as far as my 2 minute recce could fathom.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "hastag usage", but when you compose a "thread" you can add what is essentially the equivalent of a twitter hashtag by hitting the # symbol that is provided and whatever succeeds it is rendered like a hashtag (but without the hashtag symbol). You can search on those terms (by "Top", "Recent", "Profiles"). So, for the BHAFC hashtag:-

Thankyou for that AZ. Do you use Threads and if so, do you think it's the Bellend factory that others suggest or that it does have it's uses?

Like others, I'm considering if my twitter usage has run it's course.

I created a Threads account about a year ago (when there was an initial surge of people exiting twitter) and posted a few "threads". Since then I occasionally looked in but I hadn't been active [just to explain, I don't have a "personal" account - on both twitter and Threads I post about the Albion academy - that is my "thread" in the image above].

I've never heard anyone call Threads a "Bellend factory" - on the contrary, in the last few days there seems to have been an avalanche of new accounts on there from people who have quit twitter because they had enough of Musk's meddlings.

My criticism of Threads would be the lack of BHAFC-related activity (and the fact that many clubs don't have a presence or are not very active), but I'm hoping that over time that will change. I guess I just want it to be a better twitter.
