The TVL database lists all the addresses that dont have a licence , the equipment in the van or someone using a hand held "wand" reveals what you're actually watching on TV. Every month there is a list in our local paper of about 40 people who are caught without a licence and taken to court to be prosecuted.

I only got court once years ago, she made me singe up there and then. I did not mind as I was moving out at the end of the month and cancelled the DD. Never had one since but TBH I don't watch much TV anyway.

They dont need to enter your property as they already have all the evidence required for a prosecution.

no idea but whatever means they do use is highly unreliable. they can charging up to our front door a few weeks ago saying we were watching a tv without a licence and now we're liable for a fine. i said prove it. she couldn't. she said she'd come in and look at our tv receiving equipment. i said you won't. she said i must buy a licence right now otherwise she will file this paperwork and i will get a fine. i said prove the use of a tv here that means we need a licence. she said let me inside and i will. we argued for a while on the doorstep before she realised i wasn't going to back down and wandered off with her clipboard.

i complained about her and it is has now started a whole chain of paperwork from them. we notified them years and years ago we do not have a tv service, we do not watch tv and they refunded us what was already paid for that years licence fee. this is the first time (apart from some stupid letters every so often) they have bothered with us. not sure if she really does have proof that she believes is correct but we do not have a tv here that is capable of receiving live broadcast or however they call it and i know we haven't watched live tv for 4 years. we probably wouldn't have 8 kids if we did have a tv. i am not sure if she had proof that believed was correct or if she was trying her luck. but the powers that be were quick enough to believe me on the phone that we are tv less and need no licence.

I always thought and I am happy to be corrected that if you listen to a radio that can receive the BBC stations that you were also required to have license. Might be an old wives tale.

I think the discount blind people get is ridiculous but some would argue fair as instead of the old £10 off the license they now only have to pay 50% of the fee.

nope, you don't need a tv licence to listen to any radio nor to watch the iPlayer so long as you do not watch it as the programme is being live broadcast.

Some things I know :
1. The only people who buy TV licenses are people who don't want to break the law.
2. The people who get caught and prosecuted are those who don't know the many ways to circumvent the system (there are many but I'm not going to post them here).
3. The TV licensing authority rely on their enforcement officers bullying and browbeating people into admitting they are watching TV without a license.
4. There is no way on God's green earth that the TV license people are going to get a search warrant (I know this, I sign search warrants).
5. They have no right of entry and they know it, if they attempt to force an entry you are entitled to prevent them (as long as you stay within the law).
6. You do not have to answer any questions that they ask, they have no right to know anything; this includes whether you are the occupier of the property. A firm, but polite "please leave my property" should suffice.

I do not condone watching TV without a license.

i stand to be corrected, but wasnt the detector van a invention to keep everyon on the straight and narrow but they couldnt detect a thing?

now they rely on their database of addressess, though that doesnt seem too clever as they couldnt work out that while i didnt have a licence the missues did at the same address, when they sent a demand to pay.

... we do not have a tv here that is capable of receiving live broadcast or however they call it and i know we haven't watched live tv for 4 years.

a device that is capable is the term i believe. theres a sneaky little use of "live" in there, if you use a VCR, DVD player, sky box like device and watch playback only, or your PC has a TV tuner you still require a licence.

nope.

only if you are watching or recording it as it is being shown on tv. if you watch last nights eastenders at lunch time today you don't need a licence. if you watch your dvd boxset of the wire you don't need a licence.

we do not watch or receive any live (or as shown on tv) tv broadcast and do not need a tv licence. we do watch things on iplayer the following day, watch many dvds and the bbc radio.

>The law states that you need to be covered by a TV Licence if you watch or record television programmes, on any device, as they're being shown on TV. This includes TVs, computers, mobile phones, games consoles, digital boxes and DVD/VHS recorders.

You don't need a licence if you don't use any of these devices to watch or record television programmes as they're being shown on TV - for example, if you use your TV only to watch DVDs or play video games, or you only watch programmes on your computer after they have been shown on TV. If this is the case, please let us know, as this helps us to keep our database up to date and means you won't receive the standard letters we send to unlicensed addresses.

Not quite, you need a TV licence to watch live broadcasts on pretty much anything that can receive one.

They have very few live programmes on iPlayer.

If you are watching something that isn't on BBC at the same time - you technically don't need one.

Oh yes: "You do not need a television licence to catch-up on television programmes in BBC iPlayer, only when you watch or record at the same time (or virtually the same time) as it is being broadcast or otherwise distributed to the public. In BBC iPlayer, this is through the Watch Live simulcast option."

But most of the bbc channels are broadcast live, so surely this would be very hard to control? BBC iPlayer - Watch - BBC One London

i take i thats from the TV licencing? im cetain thats changed then, as i remember debate about the very point of watching recorded TV some time ago. the definition used to be device that was capable of recieving TV required licencing, as it closed up a large VCR shaped loop hole. i remember the Halls handbook saying this couldnt be used as an excuse. CCTV monitor TVs which can be used to watch prerecorded material where exempt.

either way, as written above its basically means you dont have to have a TV licence anymore: if you use a DVR you are always watching playback. time i got one of them.

no... im confused. it says you *do* need a licence to record.:O :dunce: oh well, the missus pays, so wont worry about it.

Wouldn't it have just been easier to let her in to check then if you have nothing to hide and save all the unncessary hassle ?
