Given the outside possibility that Trump could become the next American President, there was never any realistic possibility of his being barred from the UK and I don't think our national interest would have been served by doing so. However, I would not be so swift to dismiss the sense in having the debate nor see the need to insult those signing the petition. Yes, there is such a thing as freedom of speech. Trump is free to make whatever remarks he chooses and we remain free to voice any opposition to them that we might have. There are worrying undertones in U.S political debate right now. Witness the Muslim that was removed from a Trump rally while wearing a sweatshirt declaring that she came in peace.

But by saying "well if he wants to ban muslims from travelling to the USA, then WE should ban HIM from travelling the UK", we might as well go on to say "so NEERRRR" at the end of it, put our fingers in our ears and poke our tongue out at him. Its tit-for-tat playground stuff and complete nonsense. Challenge his views. Engage him in debate. Invite him over to visit some British muslim communities. But don't just sign a childish "yaah boo sucks" petition and then collectively pat ourselves on the backs thinking "Hah. That'll show him".

It won't. Its just embarrassing populist bunkum that makes us look utterly moronic.

Banning Trump from the UK, when you look at some of the regimes who are regularly wined and dined at No10, would have been nonsensical, hypocritical and deeply embarrassing.

The dream ticket - for the Democrats. The US Republican Party, the joke that keeps on giving. Its a worrying state of affairs when the most sane candidate appears to be a Bush family member.

The entertainment value would be tremendous were he to pick Palin as his running partner if he were nominated, but I doubt it will happen. Trump is a nasty piece of work but not completely stupid unlike Palin.

The fact that it got enough signatures and was debated is an unfortunate side effect of this whole charade. What is going through the heads of the people who sign up to it though ? My guess is that most of them couldn't really give a toss about what they were actually signing. It was just another chance to get "offended" on someone elses behalf, and join in with a populist high profile movement against a widely ridiculed American politician. A bandwagon to jump on, as you say.

The traditional democratic path for this country is to elect your representatives via a secret ballot, then trust them to debate and decide policy thereafter until the next election.

Now we have this ridiculous reactionary process whereby people who are offended on someonelse' behalf just jerk their knees, whatever that means, and call on parliament to waste time debating an issue which really is an irrelevance to the lives of the people of this country. The debate was not about the leader of the USA, but about whether a numpty who would like to run for leader of the USA should be allowed to visit this country which he probably has no intention of doing right now.
