Woke, if I have grasped the concept more or less aright, is about tolerance, acceptance of all branches and beliefs of human existence, human rights for all, including prisoners and ex-prisoners (who were probably victims of a right wing reactionary state kept in power by right wind reactionary people anyway) - certainly not the sort of never forgive, never forget, judgemental people that woke is supposed to transcend. Lot of people struggling to live up to their woke ideals tonight, it seems!

FWIW I think he's probably a bit of a sh*t too - but then again, I've never been accused of being woke! Puts head down and heads for the hills (or in this case, for sleep!)
Nailed it

You are 10 years older than me and I salute your ability to re-appraise, re-evaluate, and look at the bigger picture. It can get harder as the appeal of certainties takes on a luster, when viewed from an ever increasing distance.

Stay on target, H (to quote Star Wars 77), too late to deviate now.
My later comments were acerbic and ironic. Dipping with scorn. At the net curtain twitches, and the tut tutters. Who ought to know better.

Deeney has a platform on the radio. To me he is the voice of the battered, who battered, and who slowly is becoming better. He's not fit to be ploughed into the sod. Yet.

Fun facts.

Deeney made his final appearance for Watford at the Amex as a sub in August 2021, in a 2-0 defeat for the Hornets.
Deeney appeared on Celebrity Mastermind last year, with his specialist subject - the Spiderman films of Sam Raimi. He scored 0 points.
Deeney has a tattoo of Jeremy Kyle on his lower back, after the former TV presenter helped him load a sofa and a fridge onto a flatbed lorry when he moved to Walsall in 2006.

Good point, except he's been an utter bellend for the 13 years SINCE.
I genuinely knew nothing of this. Fair enough, a useless bully at FGR for a couple of months but unless you can reel off his rap list, I'm going to have to use Google myself, which I can't be arsed to do.

Perhaps he believes (believed) in rehabilitation?
I’m sure he does, as I said in my later, more serious post.

He just seems to end up with coaches completely misaligned with the football club’s philosophy though, like Tony Bloom hiring John Yems.

A leopard CAN change their spots, but very often they don’t. Deeney’s approach seemed to be bullying and selling out his players. And not winning games.

This Troy Deeney?
The internet never forgets. I’m in my 60s. I thank god that social media wasn’t around 40-50 years ago. I’d probably never have worked since the wild days of my youth.

As with any individual, or far worse, any group, whining about kindness, tolerance and understanding, these virtues are applied only to those people we like and approve of. Trying to understand and accept the weaknesses of our political enemies, or footballers who play for other clubs, is just too damn hard, isn’t it? Much easier to sink into the warm bath of groupthink and hypocrisy.

To be fair, Troy Deeney is the sort of person I’d employ just so I could sack them.
And if I owned FGR so I could also force-feed him burgers which have the texture and taste of cardboard and sausages made of sawdust. That’ll learn him.

To a point, I get and understand what you’re saying. I also, most cases, prefer to understand and forgive. But the character in question has to want to change and/or sort themselves out. From what I can tell Deely is still a knob and especially a bully.

"forefend"? Where do these words come from sir? Magnificent.
Pity he spelt it wrong - forfend!

I wouldn’t usually point such things out. That just seemed deeply ironic! ;)

One of Worthing‘s premier Church Organists’ is an FGR fanatic but at a service last week he was blunt in his appraisal, Vince is an, albeit Green, megalomaniac, the club is sleepwalking back into Non League where they will remain under the current regime and despite his various foibles Deeney was on a hiding to nothing, as was Ferguson, in fact, pardon the pun he said not even Sir Alex Ferguson could get a tune out of the current squad.

Regardless of his previous off the pitch issues, his reactionary comments last week show him to be just another one of the recent ex-player brigade with a lack of emotional intelligence or man management skills required to be a successful manager, but a name to grab some attention for your club for a few weeks. See Gerrard, Rooney et al..

Gods country fortnightly
Amazed Dale Vince employed him, about as unsuitable to management as Boris Johnson.

FGR have really dived since Rob Edwards departed

Why has “woke” eco warrior Dale Vince now hired Duncan “Disorderly” Ferguson and convicted violent jailbird Troy Deeney in less than two years ???
I assume he's so enfeebled from lack of protein that he needs a big lad to look after him.
You know, opening doors, reaching things on the top shelf at the supermarket, protecting him from bullies who want to steal his lunch money. Normal things like that.

If that was the only thing he'd done.....

However, in just a few weeks at FGR he won only three points, got a four game touchline ban and publicly humiliated his players, calling them 'babies' and singling out a guy who's still recovering from missing a penalty at Wembley that saw Coventry stay in The Championship, losing them over £100 million that now goes to Luton.

Not the actions of a reformed character, nor of a good coach or leader.
