I think I remember someone saying that Southern Railways were replaced their rolling stock from Brighton to Eastbourne with older (40-year old) rolling stock.

They've only gone and bloody done it...

Now I can have the luxury of going to and from work in a 100-yard long crate, with a gear and a clutch system borrowed from a sick kangaroo and seats made of death.

Why the giddy f*** did they do that?

They are Class 313's which were built in the late 70's. To be used on Brighton - Seaford, Brighton - West Worthing, and Hove shuttles to begin with.

Southern will be strengthening two key evening commuter trains when the new timetable comes into effect in May. The 16.17 from London Victoria to Eastbourne/ Littlehampton and the 17.23 service from London Bridge to Eastbourne will have twelve carriages compared with the eight they have today.

Southern regularly monitors passenger loadings on key commuter routes and had identified these two services as the highest priorities to benefit from additional carriages. Strengthening both services from eight to twelve carriages will provide more than 450 extra seats for passengers travelling between London and Littlehampton/Eastbourne in the weekday evening peak period. Extra seats provided by Southern in the evening peaks now total over 700 since the train in most need of additional seats, the 17.59 London Bridge to Horsham train was strengthened in December.

Southern’s Service Delivery Director, James Burt said: “We know there are certain routes on our network which are very busy and in need of extra seats. Our passenger loading figures showed us that the Eastbourne services were in much need of strengthening - and so did our passengers. I am sure our Eastbourne commuters and those using stations along the route will benefit greatly from these additional seats.”

Southern is able to strengthen the Eastbourne/Littlehampton services due to the introduction of additional trains on other parts of the Southern network in May.

The leaflet that they issued a few weeks back promised that the Seaford line trains would be tarted up a bit during the summer.

The big issue seems to be toilets. These trains (brought in from North London) don't have one. Is it possible to travel from Moulsecoomb to Lewes in third world conditions like this? Last night, I refused to take the risk and went by BUS instead.

I doubt this claim very much. My morning commuter train from Shoreham to London Bridge has been getting busier and busier and now it is almost impossible to get a seat. That's a stand of an hour and a quarter all for the princely sum of £388 a month ! They changed the timetables this week and it's even worse. Service improvements my arse.

Long stoory Large.

Basically Southern needed to strengthen their trains in the South London suburbs. This was partly to do with the Olympics but also to encourage outer London commuters.

Unfortunately most of the stations there cannot take 12-coach trains, the standard long-distance formation, where you couple 3 4-car units up.

But they could take 10 cars (4+3+3) which would mean taken the Coastway 3-car units up to London where they can be coupled up.

BUT that means you have a gap on the South Coast with no rolling-stock, so they bought the old stuff being replaced on the North London line, which was being replaced ...for the Olympics.

They are about 40 years old and have not yet been refurbished, just repainted in southern livery. It was too expensive to kit them out with toilets apparently. And they have no air-cond...
