Just checked. The 171's are still running.

Believe it or not it is still quicker to get to Dover via the coastal route rather than London or the super fast train from St Pancreas.

That's the one. A cracking service, that was going to start from Eastbourne rather than Brighton.

I must go for a ride on that service. I go birdwatching on the marshes east of Rye; would be interesting to see the view from the train. Seems a bit silly that it doesn't stop at places like Winchelsea any more. Also would make sense to electrify the line, though I can't see that happening with all the cuts that have to take place.

These are the trains that I used to see travelling through Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters on the Enfield service out of Liverpool Street from about 1990 onwards. Of course they used o/h power collection on a different (ac) voltage back then but were always designed so they could be re-equipped for 3rd rail 750 V dc and used either north or south of the Thames ( but unlike the class 319's NOT simultaneously ).

Before then I was riding on these :

I used to have to take these trains from Clapham Junction to Olympia. They shared the line with the modern Southern trains that they are replacing down here and the service all round was appalling. These lovely old ladies have a terrible reliability record and whilst they may only be running along the coast, they are more than capable of blocking the line for London trains. Totally taking the piss.

i recently got the train from london road to brighton after a night on the booze and a domino's 'sizzler'. on the way to the station, the stomach started to rumble. i knew a storm was on the way. by the time i was on the platform i was almost in tears, counting down every second on the platform screens toward holy relief. when the train came into view it was like caesar giving me the thumbs up - i will be spared. i called on my a-level vectors to judge where the doors would halt, and raced aboard. finding the ticket inspector i asked, "where are the lavs on this train?"
"sorry mate, none on this train."

I don't really wish to know where this story headed from there, but I can say from personal experience, I know how you felt.

They'll be expecting us to pull down the window and open the doors ourselves soon...

I long for them to bring those trains back. You could have fresh air on a train and not the atsmosphere of sweat and colds that they have now. And you could acttually get on a train at the right time rather than all the doors being looked 30 seconds before the train leaves
