Trains to Germany

any one got any links or advice for say . . .getting a train from er Calais to gelsenkirchen on Saturday.,

No idea where to start looking,

flights way to expensive + driving not really an option

yeah , calais . Can get ferry very cheap and wanted to see if it's possible,

f ked if I want to pay £350 + for a filight to Dortmund or Cologne if I can avoid it

No price, strangely, but the quickest journey takes 6hrs 38 minutes from Waterloo to Gelsenkirchen, with three changes: Waterloo to Bruxelles. Bruxelles to Koln. Koln to Essen. Essen to Gelsenkirchen.

gets in at 5 , gelsenkirchen is over an hour to cologne + you woul dnot be able to come back until mon.

The train from calais is 12 hours so thats outta the Q.

Drove to frankfurt from calais in about 5 so 12 looks harsh.

Might just bite the bullet and fly or if not have an all dayer / BBQ

I suspect you'll have trouble trying to connect with trains from Calais.

I suggest the dutchflyer to Amsterdam - 25 quid each way from London. From there you can get a direct train to Gelsenkirchen (2 and a half hrs, 40 Euros).

or you could get a Eurostar to Brussels, changing again at Cologne.

Eurostar are doing returns to Brussels for £59, so maybe another option would be to do that then sort the rest out when your in Europe. Or hire a car for the Brussels - Gelsenkirchen bit.

I've still not got a passport sorted - is it true you can travel through Europe with just a driving licence? Or do you need your passport?

You will definitely need a passport - British immigration won't let you in or out without one. No checks once you're driving on the other side but they check passports at the station in Brussels.

Bugger. I could've sworn you only needed a driving licence now. Cos I flew to Sweden once from Stansted using only my driving licence, can't figure how I got away with that! Strange.

6am train from Brussels to Gelsenkirchen (arrives just after 10am) - 100 Euros return

Hotel booked in Essen for Saturday night (£100 a night but not easy booking at this late stage)

Leave Essen 8am Sunday morning, down to Cologne for a couple of hours then back to Brussels for the 17.03 back to Waterloo.
