If we had a 24-hour railway this would solve the problem wouldn't it? No time for the snow to settle on the rails before the next train's through.

Just an idea, like.

i like it.

We were running trains all night to try and keep as many lines open this morning as possible, Under normal circumstances it's impossible because half the network shuts down for overnight engineering works.

Suprisingly, and perhaps a little disappointingly, i managed to make it into London today without too much trouble. Its usually a 1hr35min journey door to door and i did it in just under 3 hours...

Already worried about getting home though; reckon it'll be carnage at Victoria tonight.

That pretty much mirrors my journey in, plus my fears about going home. I am planning to leave work soon!

I got to Redhill station this morning and was virtually manhandled OUT of the station and told that there were no trains to London Bridge.
So I go home, phone in only to be told that everyone else is in (fair enough they mostly live in London), check on the net and it appears that trains ARE running to London Bridge. So i go back and get manhandled out of the station again.
WTF IS HAPPENING ????????

I got to Redhill station this morning about 90 minutes after my next door neighbour - who was still on the platform. Hopped onto some hopelessly overcrowded Southern train which then CRAWLED to London.

Overall, it was a 2 hour journey and I was in at 10.30.

(And I saw a bloke at Redhill wearing an Albion HAT - was that you? ??? )

Ruddy trains have cost me a day's holiday!!

It's annoying for everyone who's trying to travel but there was plenty of effort put in last night to try and get trains running today, We had ghost trains and de-icers running all night and teams of maintenance guys out on the track all night trying to clear snow & ice from sets of points and other signalling equipment but there's only so much that can be done in one night.

How did you get on? My boss is pretty easy going and let me leave early; i got the 4:30ish train back and although it was packed i found a seat and got home without too much delay

I'm on a course in Central London for three days (started today).
I managed to get on a train at about 7.15 at Hassocks this morning (standing room only) which crawled via most stations - including Redhill - to Victoria. Got there at about 8.40.

Made it to my course, but was one of only 6 of the 14 booked in to make it. Two of the others were quite late, too.

Train back was pretty smooth, though and I even got a seat and some shut-eye.

Hopefully, the next two days will be OK, as I'm not sure what happens if I miss any of the course.

Best bit was that lunch was included - and they'd catered for 14. One bloke, on going up for his fifth plate of food said "I'm just eating for the sake of it now!". There was loads wasted.

Uckfield line is running fine.

Any twitter users out there who commute have a look at uktrains / FrontPage will send you updates from the train companies directly as well as people who tweet @uktrains with service updates. Very useful.

The 9.49 Brighton - Victoria today set off today on time !

But they announced it was going to have to divert to London Bridge because there was a problem at Victoria.

On the train the announcement was along this lines that they were "probably" going to have to go to London Bridge , but they would let us know on the way because some one was going to call them.

Approaching East Croydon, he came on again saying they hadn't heard if they were going to London Bridge or Victoria and that he was going to "ask the platform staff at East Croydon"

We did indeed end up at London Bridge.

Surely if this was a sitcom - and not our mainline railway - it would be unbelieveable.

I accept full responsibility however, because the trains are always sh1t when I travel on them and it can't be like this everyday? Can it? No one would use them.

No I can confirm that they are not shit everyday, normally you see one thing really shit a week. The rest of the time trains are anything from on time - 5 mins late.....thats the norm. It's amazing how a train can be running 2 mins late for it's first journey in the morning. Railway workers = clowns
