Train ticket question

Some help from any train bods would be helpful here.

On Friday I've got a set train ticket booked to Nottingham. The set time is from London at 12.17. There is no set time to leave for the Brighton-London part of the journey even though the tickets were purchased together.

However.

I can no longer make the 12.17 from London and am about to buy a later ticket from London-Nottingham. This would mean me leaving Brighton after 12.17. Will my Brighton-London ticket still work? Is there anyway the ticket inspector can tell?

Thanks

Mmmm, sorry. You lost me just after "On Friday..." even though I read it three times.

Good luck though.

Are they separate tickets (pieces of paper)?

If it's a separate ticket, just check what it says under "Validity". If it doesn't say something like "booked train only" or "valid only with reservation" then you're probably fine.

You only have to use the set train for the bit that the seat reservation is for so you will be fine.

My mate's got the ticket I'm just getting him to check now.

Edit:

Apparently it says "booked train only" and it's all under one ticket. In which case I won't be able to use it, will I? Because I wont be travelling with the reservations (i.e. my mate).

Is that right ?

I thought you could buy cheap Southern Railway returns where you are booked on certain trains but no seat reservation is issued ?

I think the only problem you might have is if your original ticket was off-peak & you were now travelling during peak time.

Indeed you can but in the case of Conboy's ticket I believe I'm right. When we went to Hartlepool we had tickets from Kings Cross to Hpool. The bit between KGX and darlo we had seat reservations so we had to get that train, but we could get any train we liked between darlo and Hartlepool.

A seat reservation doesn't indicate a restricted ticket

All this train ticket mumbo jumbo is hard for an oldie like me. We used to buy a ticket and get on any train if it was after 9.30 it was off peak. There was a 'workmens' ticket which meant if you was in London by 8.00am and retiurned after 7.00pm the price was very cheap about 5s (25p).

If you cant catch the train that you have a reservation on cant you just catch any train and take a chance on a seat or even stand if needed.

Technically you can't get on any train other than the one that was booked, but most ticket inspectors don't get paid enough to really care that you're on a later train so they'll just let you get away with it. If you get one who questions it, play dumb. Not just "oh I'm sorry is that not the right ticket?" dumb but proper dribbling in your lap, munching on Crayola dumb. There's a good chance they'll give up trying to explain and just say "I'll let you off this time but get on the right train next time"

Come on! You know the lunatics have taken over the asylum. You can't go to watch league football without booking your seat a year in advance and remember the thread recently about the horrendous fine levied on a couple who alighted from their booked train one stop too soon. :US:

Those were the days when the railways were a SERVICE rather than a BUSINESS.

I travel long distances most days, and this just isn't true. I've seen many people forced to pay a surcharge because they booked to travel at a particular time, but actually travelled at a different time. If you have booked a ticket for a stated, timed train, then you must travel at that time, or your ticket will be worthless. I suggest you get down to teh station hotfoot and see if they will transfer your ticket to another train.

The ticket says you need to be on service from St. Pancras (I assume) at 12:17 on Friday, that you need to be on, you tend to find that these deals are very restrictive (even though at that time of day it makes no real difference). How you get there from Brighton and what time is down to you.

That's true up to a point however years of travelling by rail has taught me that if you happen to be unfortunate enough to meet a jobsworth ticket inspector (who feels that wearing a uniform makes him or her important) they are likely to charge you the full fare. The only way to be really sure is to get on the scheduled train. Oh, if a railway official tells you it's okay to use that ticket on a different service you need to get that in writing. Different train companies are not the slightest bit bothered about what the employee of another train company says, and believe me your word will not be good enough.
