Train Alert - to/from Brighton

Reports that the inevitable has happened and the Brighton Mainline has started to flood at Patcham and is affecting signalling - will almost certainly cause disruption.

All Coast services have a 50mph speed restriction in place too, due to the weather.

At the moment the site says

At the moment, there is no immediate risk of flooding. We will keep you updated as the situation progresses.

Yes, thats due to signalling problems caused by flooding at Patcham. More rain on the way too.

Just spoke to a colleague who commutes from Hassocks, and he spoke to a train driver this morning who said that all of next week they intend to run a Bus replacement services both ways as that section will be shut due to flooding. So, it sounds like it's anticipated.

Whats the alternative ?

Only positive thing is that Southern and FCC are prepared. Diverting via Lewes isnt much help either due to the crap signalling between Brighton and Lewes. Getting to the Amex on Monday could be fun, especially as the main P&R is at Patcham of course !!

All depends on the weather - simple as that. Engineering work on Sunday between Brighton and Preston Park though, reduced service diverted via Hove is planned.

So even though the forecast isn't THAT bad for the weekend we are just waiting for the rain that has already arrived to break the surface? It's inevitable (or at least 99% certain)?

Just found this on the Southern trains site:-

"Because of the continued heavy rain being experienced, water levels on parts of our network are much higher than normal and several routes now report flooding. Some Brighton services are being diverted via Lewes, no services are able to run to Southampton and there are other areas being affected by flooding causing speed restrictions to be imposed. Some services will be terminating short of destination and journey times are likely to be extended."
