It's a pity you don't have a Family Rail Card as that would say you a lot. It might be worth inquiring about that and getting one depending on how many of you are going, I think they're about £20 but there are significant savings if there are enough in your party. If you decide to buy one then you'll need a passport sized photograph of yourself.
Southern trains have a saver scheme whereby if you book from either Littlehampton or Brighton to Vic, you should get a single for £5. I used to get the train from Durrington but book it from Littlehampton for the cheap fare. Try that, but make sure you pur littlehampton in as your starting destination
Also, for this price, you have to be on the train time you specify. If you miss that train you will have to pay again
