It's remarkable how this has almost been ignored today. Is it because it is about Diane Abbott (I'm no fan of hers) or a black person or a woman? Saying she should be shot, when two MPs have been killed in the last 8 years is also incitement.
All Hester says is he's sorry and we should now 'move on'.

He also called all his “foreign” workers together to defend himself against online claims that he had made racist remarks. During this meeting, he said he abhorred racism and told his team their progress would not be “based on the colour of your skin, your ethnicity, where your parents are from”.

I wonder what the Tories would be doing if he was a less generous donor? At what amount does the response change from "What he said was inappropriate, not racist or misogynist, he has apologised, so let's move on (we're keeping the money)"
to
"We condemn what he said & will give the money back ASAP (we can't keep the money, it's toxic)"

My guess is anything under £1m gets the latter response (though I may be giving them too much credit and the reality is something like £10k)

What would the Tories being saying if David Sainsbury was caught saying "I'm not antisemitic, but seeing Grant Shapps makes me hate all Jewish men & he should be shot".
Would the Tories consider this antisemitic and be calling for Labour to return the £3m or so donated last year? Hmmmm...

Yep, it's the classic 'if the roles were reversed' scenario that I often highlight. You could IMAGINE what the usual suspects would be saying if it was someone on the other 'side' saying something like that.

Also, if, as that Mel Stride claimed, it's not race- or gender-based, what's the guy apologising for, then? Because he got caught out, presumably?

I'm increasingly perplexed why this sort of behaviour is allowed. Some Tories have called out Hester as a racist - but presumably only the target of the racism (in this case Dianne Abbott) can actually press charges? If I were her, I would....but perhaps she's wary of the huge amount of vitriol that would inevitably rain down on her from the Mail, Express, GBNews, etc, etc. Unbelievably depressing all round.

Cases often proceed without an alleged victim supporting prosecution. The police gather the evidence that a crime has been committed, and the CPS decide whether to proceed based on the evidence provided.

In this case, if he is prosecuted, Abbott wouldn’t need to do anything.

Half the dimwits that already give her a load of abuse won't realise she hasn't supported the prosecution and will give her more abuse anyway. You could say that's what happens with domestic abuse victims, police involvement can make it worse, especially if they go ahead without the support of the witness. The victim not supporting the prosecution generally indicates they're fearing reprisal greater than what they've already received.

Correct.

It’s 50/50 whether the police would pursue a prosecution on this without her support.

Arguably it’s inciting racial hatred and could be a stand alone prosecution.

I'm wondering if this is classed as racial harassment then it would be out of time. If the police said the phrase 'she should be shot' counted as racial incitement, then there isn't a statute of limitations.

Been listening with interest today, I never thought the country could come to this. What Hester allegedly said is racist and misogynistic in the extreme and there is no excuse. Our first Minority Prime Minister should be calling this out as such and acting but sadly, he's spineless and there is the matter of that odd £10m to consider too. They can't say Hester Is/ was Racist and keep the cash.

As for the government minister trying to say that what was said was neither racist or sexist is a new low and we have had plenty of new lows from this government in the last 5 years. The words spoken, if true, cannot be smoothed over and categorised " We put it behind us and move on. "

If this is allowed to stand without serious Government action then we can comfortably say that we are now a racist country and our government is complicit.
