we have state and federal govts. we are , per capita the most governed country on the planet , they are all on 6 figure salaries with perks and the local shire/council CEO'S can earn 300 k a year on a salary basis .......it's a ****ing joke mate.

Oh, I agree Australia is over-governed. That is, however, a legacy of how the country was originally formed and the division of powers between state and federal. In theory, state and federal governments should not have overlapping powers, however the lines have, over the decades, become somewhat blurred. You're still stuck with a system, however, that recognises and treats the States as defined entities in their own right, and this is entrenched in a written constitution. In that respect, the Australian states are not dissimilar to the 4 countries that make up the UK.

Having said that, I'm not sure the situation over here is any better. In Australia, there are 3 tiers:

Federal - with defined responsibility areas, and 2 houses both elected with a total of 227 MPs across the two houses.
State - with defined responsibility areas that are different from the Federal level. (NSW has 177 MPs across two houses)
Local - just a single tier.

For me here in England, I've got 4 tiers:

UK Government (which also acts as England government) - total of 650 MPs elected
East Sussex County Council
Wealden District Council
Uckfield Town Council

And I'm pretty sure I'm one of the lucky ones having only 4 tiers.

yes , indeed , they are an imposition on our every day income , the slight difference being that their salaries are skimmed from a larger population in the UK so you are maybe , marginally better off.......we do have slightly better weather though...

You very rarely hear people in the UK saying "there is too much Government", mainly they complain there isn't someone to solve their problem.

The "small state" is a mythological nirvana promoted by the Conservatives who in reality (as all Governments do) simply continue the status quo.

I think "small state" is actually something good Conservatives get when they go to heaven, along with "choice of water supplier".

Boris Johnson faces a hugely important verdict from voters on Thursday as the Conservatives defend seats in Wakefield and in Tiverton and Honiton, with a double defeat likely to reignite speculation about a new challenge from Tory MPs.

The byelections were called after the respective MPs resigned in disgrace. Imran Ahmad Khan stepped down in Wakefield having been convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage boy, while Neil Parish quit in Tiverton and Honiton after watching pornography in the Commons.

They’ll lose both but it will have zero effect on the PM & his toxic and talentless cabinet. The Tory rebels lost their chance to slaughter the pig after the last vote of no confidence.

Hoping for Labour and Lib Dem wins today. It chips away at Boris' majority - which in turn will make it that little bit easier for Tory rebels to create embarrassing U-turns and/or defeats in Parliament that will help erode his ability to hang on.

Impressive speaker and obviously has an appreciation of the issues and a clear vision for the solutions. Wish he was running the country.

Precisely. A very wealthy man arguing for higher taxes for the wealthy and lower for the working classes. Growth, growth, growth.

I could listen to him all day. Very articulate and sensible man.

The only other tier might be a Parish Council (although I don't think you'd have one of those and a Town Council)

I only have two

Brighton & Hove City Council (Unitary Authority)
UK Government.

I’ve tried to support Starmer for a while, he inherited a basket case of a party overwhelmed by the inadequacy of Corbyn. I think he has done an ok job in making labour electable again but……and it’s a big but……..Johnson wins so many over because he is charismatic and bombastic. People love a character even if he is a lying charlatan with the morals of an alley cat. Labour now need a leader to compete not just on policy and integrity but on personality. Sad to say, that is what politics has become in this country.

Personally, I don't want someone who is bombastic and charismatic if that is associated to an empty vessel, which, in my opinion, sums up Johnson. I think people did vote for him for the reasons you gave but I would suggest most are now seeing through his act.

I think a steady hand is needed, Starmer has that but he is not forceful or proactive enough. Being the opposite of Johnson is t enough. You have to bring the right to him, square up to him, go toe to toe. And have strong opinions and policies.

He’s a solicitor in a fist fight. We need a fist fighter in court.

Lib Dems win Tiverton and Honiton.

Sensational result with a swing of nearly 30%.
