if someone had reported at the time, who knows what may have occured. im commenting on what happens now with investigations of breaches in the past.

Not sure I quite follow. Are you suggesting that if a law was broken say 12 months ago there should be no investigation? All police investigations are into events that took place "in the past". If the police didn't investigate crimes that took place in the past, they wouldn't have very much to do.

Maybe I've just been whooshed so hopefully you could expand on your line of reasoning here.

He looks like a parody of a Tory party advisor from a 1980s sitcom

the police have stated, going back to early in the year, they wont investigate covid breaches, only deal with them immediate. for 9-10 months everyone was quite content about that.

I'm not sure where you get the idea "everyone was quite content about that", I suggest general public opposition is quite the opposite.

Furthermore, the "not investigating retrospectively" policy is bit more nuanced than they like to admit.

Whilst the police aren't looking for prosecutions, they have been quite happy "retrospectively" to put pressure on local authorities to revoke entertainment licences where no individual has been prosecuted or investigated, seemingly based on "evidence" they have read in the press.

Really? What an ****. Imagine having Holly Valance sat at home, and deciding you'd rather go and spend the evening swapping covid-riddled air with a load of dull Tory drones.

i think what he is saying, is that had someone complained to the police at the time the parties were going on, they would have intervened , as they did in other cases,.

If someone now reported a neighbour for having a party last Christmas, the police would not now investigate, although had the complaint been made at the time, they would have, and that is what they seem to be applying to these Tory Christmas parties. Whether that is the right thing to do or not is of course a whole other matter,

that argument doesn't stack up at all though, given it is an undeniable fact, the the Police knew about some of these gatherings AT THE TIME.

Thing is they would investigate, they certainly would have a word with them at least.

Well there have been cases where the police were called to commercial premises, let's call it a private "lock in". Unable to gather enough evidence at the premises, they "let it go" the time, but have retrospectively put pressure on the local authorities to suspend/remove the licence of the premises.

Quite happy not to issue fines to individuals, but quite happy to see sanctions applied that financially much worse for the owner of the business.

It's a mess.

I lost all confidence in the MET to act "intelligently" years ago. I wasn't surprised at their conduct at the Clapham Common Sarah Everard vigil/protest whatever you want to call it, because I witnessed first hand their actions in the lead up to the event, well before that evening.

Do you need to film people, send the helicopters out to monitor locals (not activists) leaving flowers at the bandstand in the morning ? I don't think so.....

Do you need five police to circle one individual who had genuinely forgotten (I witnessed the whole thing and complained) to put on their mask at Waterloo Station ? I don't think so either....

And finally as much as I hate the anti-vax morons (they make my blood boil), their conduct towards them locally (they often end up on Clapham Common) has been highly questionable also.

Quite happy to send the riot Police out to a few dispersed hippies planning to get shit faced and fall over, but not investigate what happened right at the heart of Government during the worst moments of the pandemic.

I don't blame those on the ground, since they have been completely devoid of credible leadership for years. Most Londoners I know are completely bemused the current person in charge wasn't binned years ago. We can only conclude the individual is "on message" and their ability to perform their role is completely irrelevant.

Enough is enough, he has to go.

I did enjoy Smug Eddie's sister Thornberry on Politics Live today.

Lovely lady, could do a job

What I find remarkable is that it’s his appearance at Downing Street socials people find so abhorrent. Everything about him is despicable. Frankly going for drinks during lockdown is hardly the crime of the century compared to all his other misdemeanours and incompetencies.

On the 15th May 2020 I was in Eastbourne General ICU holding my Mum's hand, telling her what a great Mum she was, but all she could say was "I can't breathe" as the oxygen was pumping into her.
I asked the nurse if they could put a stop to her suffering.
It still hurts as much today as it did then.
She didn't recover.
