Yeah he was the bigger psychopath, kudos to him, winning that player tunnel. But out on the pitch, were football is played, they were leaders, fantastic ball-winners... the difference being Vieira was also technically excellent.

United were good with Keane and turned better when he left. Vieira? Irreplacable.

The problem is it's arguable that the best players right now are the best ever because football has moved on leaps and bounds in the last 20 years or so, and the players who dominated in the late 1990s / early 2000s (Bergkamp, Beckham, Cantona, Giggs, Zola, Adams) probably wouldn't get near the best these days. Henry is probably the only exception I can think of who would slot into any of the current big teams seamlessly.

How do you work out united were better after Keane left?

They won 7 Premier League titles and 1 Champions League title in his 12 years there. In the 12 years after, they won 5 Premier League titles and 1 Champions League title.

Again, how much did you actually watch Keane play out of interest as I think you're underestimating just how good and technically excellent he was.

Stam, Terry probably best centre halves... until Virgil who is probably going to be the GOAT, if he's not already.

Can't beat late 90's and 00's for strikers - Bergkamp, Henry, Cantona, Owen, Anelka, Shearer, Sheringham, Zola, Van Nistelrooy, etc! Again, none of the current crop comes close.

De Bruyne is brilliant. Could be one of the GOAT's. Lot of competition in midfield though - from Lampard, to Hazard, to Scholes and of course Ronaldo. Has more to prove yet.

Out of the current crop, notable mention for Kante who is a worldie DM.

edit: and Salah... think he will go down as one of the GOATs.

RE Keepers; Cech deserves a mention, surely!

It's incredibly difficult to narrow it down to a few but I reckon everyone who saw them would agree that if two teams were made to face each other then Henry, Bergkamp and Shearer would be in them.

As would, surely, the entire late 90's man utd midfield. Of course that would leave not a lot of space for Gerrard, Lampard, Makelele, Kante, De Bruyne, Vierra...

Goalkeepers would be two from Schmeichal, Seaman and Cech.

It'd be quite fun to make a 'best of' team from each decade.

But this rather misses the point that generally footballers from 20 years ago were not of the overall fitness and quality of those currently. If you exclude Bergkamp and Henry, how many of that Arsenal "Invincibles" side get into the current Arsenal team? How many of the Man Utd "Treble" team get into their current first XI? One or two absolute tops, and that's despite them not being anything like as successful now.

You are joking, right? Unless you're talking about the Invincibles at the age they are now, all of them would walk into the present team. For one thing, they had a winning mentality, and the defenders could defend. And guess what? They would be as fit as the present crop of prima donnas because they would be training at today's level.

In other news, Didier Drogba deserves consideration among the greats. Unplayable on his day, and he won things. Just imagine him at the sharp end of the present Albion side ...

Alan Shearer managed to do the same to Keane years back, managed to provoke Keane in to swinging a punch that Shearer easily avoided and the ref had to send him off for.
