True, it's about time we copied Villa and spent £40m and £90k a week on guaranteed goal machines such as Wesley.

I think we all need to calm down a bit. Of course last night hurts but this season is to all intents and purposes following the previous 3 we've had in the Premier League.

Survival will go down to the last 2 or 3 games as it usually does, so to that end it's no surprise we are where we are.

Like everone else, we all all know we need a decent striker, but we simply either can't afford it or can't find the right man for a club in our position with gambles like Ali J and Locadia not having paid off in the past.

I predicted 16th this season and stand by that prediction. Of course we aspire to be and to do better but for me the bottom six in the best divison in the world is still punching above our weight - that's just my view in the cold light of day. Unless we are fortunate to find the equivalent of a Tariq in the striking department (for a virtual song) we will flirt with relegation most seasons. That's just the way it is for us and many others like Fulham, West Brom etc. Unless we start selling some assets to try to fund that elusive striker, we will always be where we are, and even then there's no guarantees. Just enjoy the ride.

The time has come to finally accept that we are not going to be spunking on a quality forward, even if we stay up. We are so close to being a good team, TB is not going to risk it all on an expensive (PL ready) and high earning forward. Just accept it and stop whinging

This reads as frustration with Maupay. Maupay has his strengths particularly when playing deep. He is not the one to lead the line. A fit Welbeck is our main hope. Also our midfielders need to stop watching rugby.

Twelve different goalscorers this season ( excluding assists ) shows the problem. The odd goal scored, here or there, by a different player on a regular basis. Fine if you are Man City who are technically and clinically much better than us ( 14 diff scorers ) Fine if you are Chelsea ( 15 diff scorers ) who have a high class forward in Werner still bedding in, Giroud to come off the bench and free scoring midfielders and full backs. Fine if you are West Ham ( 14 diff scorers ) who generally play just Antonio upfront but have much more firepower out wide and from midfield ( Soucek etc )
That leaves us and Palace ( both 12 diff scorers ) who have issues with strikers not hitting the target enough and rely on odd goals from all over the place. What differentiates us from Palace, is that we don't have the dynamism of Zaha, who regularly changes games for them. We lack that individual class.

I think Lallana and Welbeck were supposed to give us that. Both have been injury prone and in Lallana’s case embarrassingly awful in front of goal. An expensive gamble gone very wrong so far.

A loan striker on a high wage seems a good planning option. It’s clearly a specialist skill that current employees are not equipped and therefore demands a significant premium.

Agreed.
The problem is that we have a general lack of quality in the final third. We rarely deliver a good set piece. Have no really good headers of the ball, offensively ( and that includes the CB's ) Do not get behind teams enough ( March/Lamptey would help but hey ho ) and have too many similar players. A fairly lightweight, mobile side. Good at ball carrying but lacking that extra bit of class in the final third. Too many no.10's, none of whom have any real goalscoring presence and a group of forwards, of whom too many are unproven.
Its what we have and we are stuck with it. We won't score many goals. We will continue to create chances and waste them. We will all continue to get frustrated but ultimately, the game of football is about stopping goals, creating goals and scoring goals. You have to have the balance between the three. At present, we are very unbalanced.

Its not just signing. Striker, its playing with pace, incision and purpose. We're so ponderous and slow virtually every team has time to skin up, make a pot of tea and some toast before we've stopped passing it sideways elevnty thousand times on the half way line.

Too good to go down though.

This with bells on.
Surely when the coaches revue and discuss the previous games, it is patently obvious that our attack is more often than not allowing the defending team enough time to organise themselves?
That’s the very thing that sticks out like a sore thumb.

Sometimes emotions cloud our ablilty to understand a situation and it pays to get a different perspective, an outside view to help us get a handle on what is happening.

With that in mind, here is a paragraph from the Newcastle United online fanzine themag.co.uk

Yes Brighton don’t have any quality strikers which contributes to results like last night but you are daft if you don’t recognise they play great football AND are going to stay up this season. They are a far better team this season than Sheffield United, West Brom, Fulham, Newcastle, Burnley and Palace.

So that's that then, conclusive proof we need a striker and we will stay up.

If we're not going to spend the money on a decent striker, if we can't afford the wages, if we're always going to be saddled with a Championship centre forward somewhat out of his depth, couldn't we make it a tall one?

Our strikers aren't good enough for sure, but our problems do not begin and end with those positions. We don't score enough goals as a team. I am beginning to draw the conclusion that Potter needs to tweak the way we play. Is our current playing style particularly tiring? I am wondering whether this leads to what we are seeing - ineffective shooting.

Over nearly 400 league games, Lallana has a strike rate of about 1 : 6....Welbeck in nearly 250 about 1: 5.
If they both played the best part of a season and maintained those strike rates, that would be enough for us. The trouble is, neither seems likely to get in enough game time and on current evidence, have forgotten where the goal is.

Sorry where has this been reported. I haven't seen this anywhere previously.

Genuine question, as I have been under the impression our wage structure has a top level of around £50-60k per week.
My understanding was Lallana was on about £100k a week but we got around that with a signing on bonus and offering a two year contract.

None of the above has been reported the 100k or 50-60k anywhere so your impression and the 100k is pure fantasy

teams go down playing nice football without points on the board. third season in a row we're relying on at least three teams being shitter than us to stay up. should be aiming for top half, not looking at the relegation calculator in February.

Honest question but why don’t we match tactics like we saw last night ? Last season we were drawing out the opposition and were happy at times to concede possession. In games like yesterday we just continue attacking but are unable to get behind the packed defence.

Palarse had 11 players behind the bal on most occaisions . . . . we know from experience we can't pass the ball in when opposition only have 5 behind the ball, but we keep banging on the same door time and time again. That's Potters tactic.

no one will shoot!!!! yes hpop shots go over the bar, get deflected etc etc, but one has to go in. yuou need to act quick and get a shot off though . . . . we're too slow and methodical for that, and it's not a winning tactic against half a doxzen or so teams in the PL.

Idiotic attention-seeking thread.

OP, put your money where your mouth is and buy the club, then.

Pillock.

If you don’t like the thread don’t comment on it you idiot.

I 100% believe what I said last night. We need a proper top class striker. And as I said in my opening post we should sell a player or two to fund that.
