Tomorrow's walk

Just a reminder about the walk tomorrow being undertaken by the Falmer For All team, from the Clock Tower to Sheepcote Valley (by Whitehawk FC). The story is on the Albion website - "Proving the Lie of the Land".

This is to see whether Lewes District Council's submission, about "the 25-minute walk along the seafront" from the city centre to Sheepcote actually holds up. Any bets?

Actually, I am going to have a go at running the course and trying to beat 25 minutes, so wish me luck!

The walk is being restricted to invitation only, I'm afraid, because of the need for stewarding etc otherwise, but we are doing it for a worthwhile charity, the Lewes Area Play Council (reg charity no. 273882). They provide facilities for the recreation and other leisure time occupation of children resident in the area covered by Lewes District Council.

Sadly, no one from LDC - and several were invited - has accepted our invitation to take part.

At tomorrow's match we will have a bucket collection for this charity before kick-off and at half time so please bring along some extra cash.

Thank you.

What is the actual route you're taking? I might stand on a street corner and cheer you on!
It probably says in the article you refer to - which I'll read in a minute - but how far is it? It doesn't seem that far in my head, but I always get a bus home from Churchill Square and it's only half way!

Down West St from the Clock Tower, along the prom, Madeira Drive (I think, rather than Marine Parade), up the road past the Concorde II to the top, then Arundel Rd and into East Brighton Park.

It is 2.8 miles. I ran 4 miles in 29:13 along Worthing seafront in January so I should do this distance in about 21 mins, but this route is uphill towards the end, has road crossings, a busy prom and no company in a race to pace me, so it is a challenge. Any cheers will be most welcome!

2.8 miles?

The average adult's walking pace is I believe 4mph on flat ground.
Thus 1 mile = 15 minutes.
Thus 2.8 miles = 42 minutes, making no allowances for crossing roads, slowing down for hills, etc.

In short their '20 minute' claim is a lie. But then we knew that anyway.

Inspector Brier said in his report that it took him 48 minutes. Not sure what route he took, but the one that Lewes are claiming is along the seafront, which is NOT the shortest route.

I think that Lewes' claim of 25 minutes is from the seafront at the bottom of West Street to the seafront by the Marina, which is do-able in 25 minutes. Sadly for Lewes' case, one, the railway station is not on the seafront and two, neither is Sheepcote Valley.

Thankfully, Brier's word on the subject carries far more weight than Lewes' spurious claim.

not forgetting that all the sick, elderly & kids are also expected to make the walk and, of course, walk back again after the match.

Good idea at 10.30 on a freezing, wet, january night.

I shall mainly be attending to take the pictures since I'm deficient in the number of working limbs required for the walking part of a walk that far. If anyone cares to bring a flask of tea I'll be somewhere between Brighton and Sheepcote Valley!

how long did it take in the end

Ned did it in 50 mins but the majority did it in 58 mins (and that is only to the bottom of Wilson Ave near Whitehawk's ground which is where Lewes want us to go)
LDC reckoned it could be done easily in 25 mins and that's what they told Ruth Kelly.

The walkers continued on beyond Wilson Avenue and finished in the clearing past the caravan site entrance at Sheepcote which is still slightly short of where LDC think a stadium would be sited. However, we'd reached the end of the road, quite literally, by then!

Also, the first of the walkers finished at 58.15 minutes when the clock was stopped.

A tremendous effort was put in by everyone especially since it was baking hot!

Of pictures there will be some in a bit...
