Anyone having delays in their toms ripening?
Ours are growing nicely in the polytunnel, but very slow ripening!

First few Gardener's Delights in my poly are ready...in 3 weeks I'll be picking about a Kilo every 2-3 days.

Oooo, I didn't realise there was a tomato & chilli thread, good timing, I was going to post on the gardening thread!!
I bought this Chilli earlier, but I have no idea what it is, aside from the label saying Chilli. The Chilli's are growing upwards though, I have no idea what colour they should be when ripe or how hot they'll be. For all I know aside from the label saying 'Chilli' you might not me able to eat them??

I bought this Chilli earlier, but I have no idea what it is, aside from the label saying Chilli. The Chilli's are growing upwards though, I have no idea what colour they should be when ripe or how hot they'll be. For all I know aside from the label saying 'Chilli' you might not me able to eat them??

Google suggests I should wait until they turn red and let someone else try them!! 😂

Isn't the first rule of chillis whether grown or bought is to let someone else try them and see if they turn red ?

Over the years I've grown occasional chillis on my kitchen windowsill but always gone for something hot (scotch bonnet, habanero, etc) and then used them very sparingly in cooking. Recently I've been converted to buying 'mild' varieties of chillis and then using tons of them in dishes.

Trust me, after 60 odd years, it's the future :thumbsup:

We stopped growing 🌶 on our allotment as my wife cannot eat them
No ziggy really, more room for other stuff.

I don't like eating them. I just seem to be able to grow them. I'm brave with a medium curry! 😂
I think they must thrive under neglect. Tom's, potatoes and actual plants that look nice don't seem to do so well under my care.
Slugs and snails don't appear to be concerned by mild electric shocks from copper tape & have eaten my toms & potted bedding plants.
I bet the little gits don't eat the chilli's like they've eaten the Dahlias and Marigolds. ;)

They might ripen off and that might make identification easier. The fact that the fruits are pointing up suggests it might be Basket Of Fire. If/when they ripen you could ask the Chilli Growers Group on FB for an ID.

Always get my seeds from south devon chilli farm nowadays. Cheap as chilli chips and always reliable results. Growing prairie fire chillies this year. Plants only grow to about 12 inches. Very bushy, absurd number of flowers, perfick for a sunny windowsill. Planted start of April, chillies just starting to sprout. Bumper crop incoming! 🌶🌶👍

Ours are growing nicely in the polytunnel, but very slow ripening!

Same here with our tomatos, we were a bit late getting going and spring had very low light levels...Weird year to be honest....We have lots of cucumbers coming along though, have picked several broccoli heads and cauliflowers earlier, loads of soft fruit...But tomatos only just appearing....Strangely I usually have 10 million courgettes, but this year slugs reduced my plants to just 1, so probably not a bad thing as I usually can't give the things away and end up with large marrows coming in abundance...Also the beans this year have been savaged by slugs and snails...so they aren't looking so good...Peas though have been lovely...another few harvests left I hope in them....

At least we're not the only ones regarding toms.
Again with the courgettes, cannot keep up and the beans, peas, pots, brassicas and especially butternut squash all doing great.
Just need to buy an industrial freezer.
With the courgettes, Mrs AR is making chutney 🤤

Yes, everyone on our allotments is saying the same things…Sadly some people who have been there a long time are talking of letting their plots go its been that tough…It’s sad though, lots of people on the list, but we get a lot of them don’t realise how much work is really involved…

The new organic Slug pellets really don't seem to work against the sheer number that appear after every days rain. Might have to be careful what I grow from now on.
We've had loads in our garden, have decimated wife's carrots and broccoli.
We went out the other evening with a bucket of salt water and picked up about 100. I covered it (in case any of them tried to make a break) but forgot about it and when I remembered, it bloody stank. Put it down the drain outside.
Anyway, I'v now got a sharp blade on a stick and will be going out to chop the buggers tonight.

I find those bamboo satay skewers quite handy. In darkness a fishing headlight is useful as it gives you a stabbing hand and a hand to move leaves on plants so you can get right to the shits...
