I ve just been reading the online papers and I am led to believe the prison population is ballooning.

Now correct me if I am wrong but are these people not supposed to be in there for punishment rather than enjoying expensive red letter experience days that us law abiding people can only dream of?!

What makes you think that prisoners live a life of luxury ?

Very good, the trouble is a lot of people genuinely believe that though.

Tv's in cell, Games consoles in cells, 3 meals a day, not paid for, no electric bill, for use, no utility bills for use, no income tax to pay, have rights to exercise, have rights to fags,
No worries about where the next rent/mortgage payment is coming from.

Have I missed anything. ?

compared to the state of some council housing and the prospects in many areas, a life in prison is a pretty appealing one.

Yes, a lot actually. Very few have TVs in their cells. Exercise is limited to how many staff are available (quite often not enough) and the weather. Three meals a day ? Usually barely edible. They pay no income tax as they get paid a token amout that is earned by doing very menial tasks. If they decide to have 'education' they get paid nothing. The rights to cigarettes is limted and these and other luxuries like deodurant, soap and shampoo have to be paid for.

Granted people are put in prison for a reason but it's no holiday camp.

With imprisonment, the punishment is the deprivation of liberty, not imposition of hardship.
Sadly, prison is often the last resort after people have failed to engage with probation or have committed further offences etc. Sending down is never a decision taken lightly and it is usually only done after all other alternatives have been exhausted (when the offence is not so serious that immediate custody is the only option).
In the majority of cases, people are in prison because they have put themselves there (I say majority because there are some who end up there when they really shouldn't be, ie some mentally disturbed people).

Not Luton! Thank God
They may get "luxuries" but at the end of the day they get shut into a small box and not allowed out until the morning. Don't feel sorry for them for one moment, but prison life is not a bed of roses

Do they have to go outside the front gate and stand in the open to enjoy their right to have a fag? :dunce:

Probably the same way they allegedly get mobile phones in. Not sure I want to blow up a ballon which has spent a period in complete darkness!!!!!!

Sorry, but why do you think they should get paid just because they 'decide to have an education'?

Can't agree there. On the basis of you first comment prisons could be made like a 5 star hotel but it counts so long as the front door remains locked. Sorry but there should be an element of hardship because it has to act as a deterrent for future offending.

good post and as far as I know all about right
its the lack of freedom thats the killer take that away from anyone and you are talking severe deprivation
it is bad enough working in a prison let alone being there on a permanent basis

They don't get paid and unless they get money sent in they cannot afford something as basic as a packet of biscuits. Also, unless they are doing a very long sentance the 'education' is about as good as the food.
