Dean Cox’s hopes of a first league start since August have received an accidental boost from injured team-mate Jim McNulty.
Cox’s prospects of a rare opportunity from the kick-off against Oldham at Withdean on Saturday have improved with McNulty ruled out by a recurrence of ankle trouble.
The miniature playmaker came on in place of Matt Thornhill for the second half of last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at lowly Tranmere.
The adventurous McNulty’s earlier departure contributed to the change, as his left-back replacement Jake Wright is a more orthodox defender.
Cox’s introduction, behind the strikers, injected the attacking intent boss Russell Slade was looking for.
He is now a strong candidate to start against Oldham, either in the same role or on the left wing.
Cox started the first six matches of the season before losing his place to loan signing Arron Davies from Nottingham Forest.
Alan Navarro is also likely to make his first league start since August in central midfield with Gary Dicker (hip) a major doubt.
The changes forced upon Slade, with Glenn Murray also banned, will not help the manager in his quest for the consistency which has so far eluded the Seagulls.
Slade said: “We had a super performance on Tuesday (Gillingham), particularly in the first half, and then at Tranmere we were below-par in the first half, then looked like a team in the second period.
“We are so up and down from one half to the next. That is not easy to take as a manager.
“You are looking for that consistency and players performing with the same quality game in and game out.
“It’s win one, draw one and lose one. I think the good thing is we are capable of putting it altogether but we need it sooner rather than later.”

Also note a small binfest developing on the Argus comments at the bottom, due to one bloke saying he knows for a fact that Virgo is on 8k a week!
