Use some or other Harpic product sold in a black plastic container in the supermarkets.Can't remember the exact name but it is very effective and a lot stronger than ordinary bog cleaner!

Regarding your problem, I've found using nearly any thick bleach put down the bog last thing at night should have the u-bend sparkling by morning...Give the rim a coating, and you should get the same results there too...
