More due to geographic location than the actual playing element of the club though.

A distant memory, a generation ago and possibly never to be repeated.

How is it defined?

Gates? Number of trophies? Recent trophy wins?

Leeds, for example. Won loads sure but the last win, as far as I can tell, is the old First Division in 91/92. So nothing for 25+ years. Yet you'll have 20 year old kids proclaiming them to be the biggest team in the universe despite them not having won a f**king thing in their lifetime.

I don't get it

Mostly I'm happy to let Leeds or Massive do the "WE'RE SO BIG" chest thumping shit whilst watching Albion play in the Premier League.

So many people seem to grizzle about the atmosphere at the Amex. From my perch in the WSU, I'd say its no better or worse than any other PL ground I've been to these last couple of seasons. Every stadium has spells of relative quiet, and if the home team are STINKING the place out for 90 minutes in an absolute borefest, then its hardly likely to be particularly raucous is it.

So many people seem to grizzle about the atmosphere at the Amex. From my perch in the WSU, I'd say its no better or worse than any other PL ground I've been to these last couple of seasons. Every stadium has spells of relative quiet, and if the home team are STINKING the place out for 90 minutes in an absolute borefest, then its hardly likely to be particularly raucous is it.

That is very true. I saw some references to the atmospheres at Wolves and Sheff Utd, but of course they are both playing very well at home and in particularly Wolves are in their 3rd consecutive high flying season, and Sheff Utd are straight up and in everyone's face. Fact is I've been to Wolves when things haven't been quite so rosy and it's not the cauldron it is at the moment.

There are people on social media defending their right to boo players and our team in the same way that they can write a bad review for a restaurant on Trip Advisor. What does occur to me, that while we are aghast generally at being referred to as customers, Barber is actually quite right, there is a high percentage of attendees at the Amex who do genuinely see themselves as customers rather than supporters. They're there to be entertained, not provide entertainment by making an effort, or lifting the team through a bad spell or performance.

I fancy our players may dissect someone soon enough, and turn in Maximus Decimus Meridius style and ask us all, 'are you not entertained?'.

Was in the NS on Saturday as my normal seat was CLOSED

I suspect there would have been quite a few others moved around the ground away from their regular seats and friends diluting the groups of singers in the North. Nevertheless it was perfectly clear that the same issue as for league games persisted. Big-ish group under the police box singing. Small-ish group under the scoreboard (inlcuding me and my son) singing. Songs getting lost between the two groups and the people in the middle unsure or unable to join in with one of them.

You will solve it only one of three ways:

1) Scoreboard group and police box group and any others like minded join up in a single singing section. This would mean turfing STHs out of their long term seats, something we laughed at Palace for.

2) A new singing section in the SWC next to the away fans, creating an even bigger ticketing issue than 1)

3) A full on mindset adjustment by our fans, whereby anyone who doesn't want to sing in the NS looks for a season ticket move by themselves and one of the two groups takes it upon themselves to not start songs, but to listen out for the other one and join in. This would mean people winding their necks and cocks in. Also never going to happen.

Therefore the atmosphere will always be more shit that it should be at most games. However, at big games everyone seems to find their voice all round the ground and on those rare occasions the atmosphere is spine tingling and easily one of the best in the country. Probably happens once or twice a season though. It was certainly never going to happen in a cheap FA Cup match featuring a few of the stiffs against perenial Championship also-rans.

Their fans have suffered I guess. My brother in law is a Wednesday fan and their current run is apparently the worst in their history (in terms of length of time outside the top flight). So whilst they are on their slump, we are nearly equalling the best ever period, in terms of success, in our history. Yet only 10 places or so separate us both.

These lot, and like so many other clubs like them (see Leeds, Forest, Derby etc) are so bitter and self entitled that all they have is the "we are a big club" because ultimately for the last 20+ years results haven't been good enough.
You can't live on past glory forever. Football doesn't stand still, it evolves and so do clubs.
If your going to live on the backward mentality of the 70s.and 80s you'll be left behind.

Wednesday may of been a big club, yonks and yonks ago. They are not anymore. They are no bigger then us anymore.

Not sure how their potential is greater than ours. They've been in the doldrums for over a generation now. Their owner even had to sell the ground to himself to generate some wiggle room with FFP.

I'd say our current trajectory is far better than theirs, even if we went down.
