i know a lot of you on here think i am a right twat and to be fair you are probably quite correct in that assumption, but this weekend it is three years since anastasia died. one of the first things we noticed when the fixture list came out last june was how we'll be playing you guys at withdean again at pretty much the same time as we did that season. callum still talks about what was read out at half time, btw.

really i just wanted to post and urge all you who are too lazy, idle, never got around to it or whatever reason to please, please register to donate blood, register with anthony nolan and sign up for the organ donation register. or even if you are already registered find out when the next blood donation session is and go along.

anastasia shared a six bed ward with, for the most part, the same five other children while she had her treatment towards the end. all six of those children have now died. four of them because they waited for organ transplants that never came. none of them will see their sixth birthdays. i hate to be morbid, heaven knows the world is a miserable enough place without me mithering on, but i never gave blood etc before anastasia got sick because i am lazy and my kids won't get sick and need a transfusion, a liver, or some marrow. you just never know what cruel twist of fate awaits.

i am a few pints the worse for wear just now, but there are certain people on here who remember anastasia birthday or when she died and it means a lot to us and especially to mrs starry who i know doesn't visit here too much anymore but it means a lot to us. so thank you.

I,ve never thought you were a "twat"..far from it..(apart from the club you support.....LOL).

I doubt if anyone on here has forgotten Anastasia, who read NSC at the time.

It's always a good time to remind people to become an organ donor, give blood etc.......... Your personal efforts, and Starrys, to keep us informed about Anastasia, at the most difficult of times, I,m sure made many, many posters realise it's importance.

I wish you both good luck .............

Don't think it is morbid. What you say is so true, we never think anything bad will happen to us or anyone we love, but the chances are we are wrong.

Take care and best wishes

For anybody who's been put off giving blood because they're a bit scared (lets be honest, plenty are), don't be, it's a piece of cake.

The staff are used to nervous donors, and they'll offer plenty of reassurance/advice if needed. It doesn't really hurt- well for a split second, and what's that in the grand scheme of things??.

You also get FREE tea and biscuits, to assist your recovery of course, and if you work for a large company with lots of employees, you may find the blood donor van comes to your office. I'll be honest, when I first started donating it was mainly because they came to the office, and the company was quite happy to let people go down in work time and donate. so I figured I could easily string it out for an hour (got to recover properly, haven't you!) just to skive off work for a bit. And all in a good cause.

(I should add this was in my previous job). But anyway, the people requiring blood transfusions don't care what your motive was when you donated it, only that it's going to be there to save their life when they desperately need it.

Sign up today: you never know when you might need it yourself

Already a regular blood donor (rapidly approaching 30 donations and i'm still in my twenties) and I shall endeavor to drag more and more mates next time I go!

What a lovely generous post. Alas I'm too old now to give blood. At 66 they said I could no longer donate. Apart from that Starry, if you post I always read your message as it's always worth reading and you and your family are in my prayers.

The posts around Anastasia are no probably on 'old NSC' now but people who have been on here for a while will all remember your sorrow and the genuinely moving thread. Many 'hard men' of NSC shed a tear back then and I can't believe how quickly three years have passed.

Our thoughts will be with all of you at this time and if this thread even gets one more person to give blood or register with then a little more good will have come out of such a tragedy. Take care.

I was a reader but not a poster back then and it's still one of the most touching & emotional moments on NSC. Good luck to you & yours, hope you make it to Withers this year.

I feel more upset now than I was 3 years ago now you brought it up. :(

But I now have more of a direct emotional approach with children as I've grown up, I have a 2 year old neice and several friends are having babies.

Maybe its one of those things that when you grow up and become a parent, guardian or related to a child close, you feel a lot more responsibility, guilt or whatever about other children too.

:(

God Bless.

I used to give blood regularly but they stopped me recently because I had some tattoos done ?
Now I could see the logic in this in years gone by, but in this day and age tattoo's are as clean and sterile as giving blood itself.
I think it's six months until I can donate so that will be around the end of this month and I will phone and register again.

Whenever you post on here I think of what you went through then.

It makes the ridiculous 'hatred' of other clubs and their fans seem totally stupid, insignificant and a complete waste of time when there are so many really important issues in the world.

Just to point out that you can give blood up at the racecourse today between 14-00 & 16.30 or 17.30-20.00.

So just get up there and do your bit, they are low on stock at the moment and REALLY NEED YOUR HELP

I fall into the same trap as my old friend above in that I am too old seemly ( and also something to do with BP Pills?)

Anyway, thankyou for reminding us Paddy. that was a dreadful time for you and it touched us all in some way.

I am glad your life seems to be back on track and that Mrs Starry is keeping well also.

Starry , have you thought about contacting the club asking them if they will put out a message at half time ? Only a small percentage of fans at Withdean are NSCers and you will reach a wider audience with a half time announcement.

My thoughts are with you Paddy and Starry at this difficult time and I hope that someone reads this thread and is spurred to give blood or register for bone marrow.
