Anyone ever seen this BBC made 80s drama about Sheffield after a nuclear attack?

I watched it earlier and OH MY DAYS I have never seen ANYTHING quite so bleak. Relentlessly depressing and not a glimmer of hope or positivity. I loved it. They really don't make them like this anymore

....I believe Sheffield is like that, apparently it gets even worse AFTER the attack!

I remember bits of it from watching as a child at the time.

Someone pissed themselves I believe when the bomb went off.

And I recal a boy being fried, not much else though, other than the tv announcements about how to protect yourself by nailing doors across windows or something?

An excellent film, scary but not as scary as Boys From The Blackstuff, both made me angry at the time.

If I'd watched it as a child I'd have been traumatised. It's horrible. And yes there is a woman pissing herself and lots of people get fried. It's pretty graphic in terms of the body count too

When it was first shown on TV I was still a member of CND. What made it extremely realistic at the time was the tension between the Superpowers and the thought of Maggie pressing the missile launch button after a phone call from Ronnie.

I was a member of the select committee looking into the effects of a nuclear blast on a major UK city. The consensus was that if the bomb dropped on Sheffield it would provide positive benefits in the order of £10m. That aside was, that we had to make special provisions for the Human League. Don't you want me Baby, don;t you want me nowwww. Sound of the JCLs!!

Without Yosser Hughes (Bernard Hill) I think BFTB would have sunk without trace. His catchphrase "Gissa job , I can do that" is coming back into fashion.

Threads is one of my favourite films.... truly horrific. When you think it couldn't get any worse, it does.

In a scene with the boyfriend and girlfriend in the car, when the half-time football scores are read out on the radio, Brighton are drawing 1-1 with Portsmouth..... (we end up losing 5-1!).

At the time, this was the bleak outlook being painted of a nuclear war which, a lot of people thought was likely, given the relationship between Russia & America.

As 10 yr old at the time, I couldnt have given a flying f*** as long as I finished my panini footie sticker album.......got.got.got.need.need.need.got.got.need

Yes. Did you know that the time line of the film is set in 1983 and the day the attack happens is the very day Albion played in the Cup Final Replay. So if it were reality I know you might think it was, it COULD have actually been a bigger debacle.

I had to watch it at school, for some reason. Scared the crap out of me at the time.

why is it that reece dinsdale has never got any older? that was nearly 30 years ago and he still looks the f***ing same.

there are too many terror inducing scenes in that film to even know where to begin to start. without doubt the most frightening thing ever made.

its the build up and the news reports that get me the worst. just so humdrum and part of your life the news jabbering away in the background about some skirmish in a far away place that barely registers until it gets closer and closer.

Actually the score read out is Portsmouth 0 Brighton 1, I remember cheering it!

That seems unbelievably harsh. Mind you I did draw a lot of parallels between Threads and the various government issue safety films we had to watch in school. You know the ones where children thought it would be fun to play on a building site or a farm and one by one get killed off in imaginative but horrific ways:

[yt]BLhXTobrV_s[/yt]

The screams of the girl who dies from drinking poison (what is it meant to be? Weedkiller? Rat poison?) genuinely haunted me for years. Having to watch it as a 12 year old kid was entirely brutal. Mind you I never did go playing on building sites or farms so perhaps it was at least effective

Impressive memory, its all come flooding back to me. We watched them at junior school. One of them drowned in a slurry pit, one fell of the back of a tractor. The other government safety film I remember was about a boy called Robbie who, along with his friends, played on a railway line. Particularly graphic without showing him getting killed.
