[Help] Those Darned Yanks? Endangered English, part 94

These words are in need of urgent rescue: –

Probably (adv) now increasingly replaced by likely (English adjective). As in: Bissouma will likely leave Albion. WRONG!

Affect (vb) worryingly trumped by impact (English noun). As in: The latest tax rise will impact millions. WRONG!

Call me old-fashioned (many do) but those American abominations grind my gears (US). Sadly, there are many, many more.

Examples welcome.

Shouldn't the catachreses needed to be rescued include Jonathan Swift book titles?

A lot of UK companies seem to be hiring now instead of recruiting

Real estate seems in use for property

Won't be long before you are deplaning and winterizing your car

My son recently referred to our understairs cupboard as "the stairwell closet" .... :lolol: which really takes the cookie.

Hiring is putting out an ad and reviewing applications for a specific role. Recruiting is a search for the best employees then attempting to persuade them to join your company over their current job. So yes, most companies do indeed hire.
Also, real estate is part of a property. Property is an item that someone has a legal title over, real estate is a property involving land and any buildings that happen to be on that land.

The evolution of language – who'd a thought it? :lolol:

Mind you, I HATE – with a passion – 'invite' being used as a noun, so...

I always thought “Hunker Down” was an American sports expression, turns out it’s an old Scottish expression

I’ll bin that as an annoying Americanism now

The idiots that go up to a cafe / takeaway counter and say "can I get....?".

NO! You can't get anything you moron. The assistant behind the counter will get it.
